Who is Waldo, the parrot associated with Hatebeak?
Hatebeak is a Baltimore-based studio project whose premise is a death-metal band with a parrot frontman. VICE identified the bird as Waldo, an African grey, and interviewed drummer Blake Harrison about how the project worked. The 2015 VICE report covered the release of Number of the Beak.
The “lead singer” description captures the joke and identity of the project, but it does not mean Waldo performed like a conventional vocalist onstage. The reported tracks were assembled in a studio from the parrot’s sounds and the musicians’ instrumental parts.
Is Waldo really 34 years old?
That age is not verified as a current fact by the dated reporting available. Two articles provide age snapshots, rather than an exact birth date or confirmation of Waldo’s present age:

Those reports broadly point to a birth around 1989–1990, but they do not establish an exact birth date or verify that Waldo is now 34. The accurate way to state the later report is that VICE described him as 21 in 2015.
How can a parrot “sing” death metal?
Harrison told VICE that he and guitarist Mark Sloan came up with the idea while between bands. They recorded Waldo in a separate room, capturing mimicry and other spontaneous vocalizations rather than asking him to sing a song on cue. Then they cut up and rearranged the sounds, processed them with distortion and effects, and layered them over music the human members had written.

The article says the musicians sometimes encouraged Waldo with dehydrated banana chips. Harrison summed up the project’s deliberately absurd premise to VICE: “How stupid would it be if we had a parrot for a singer?”
Did Waldo perform live with the band?
The 2015 VICE account describes Hatebeak as a studio project, not a conventional touring act with Waldo performing on demand. Harrison said a live show would be impractical: the parrot vocalized when comfortable, not according to a performance schedule, and concert-level noise would be unfair to the bird. The reporting therefore supports describing Waldo’s role through the edited recordings, not claiming that he toured or gave live performances.

How is Hatebeak different from Caninus?
Caninus is a separate animal-fronted extreme-music project, not another name for Hatebeak. A 2013 Flayrah article described Caninus as a band with two dogs as lead singers, while identifying Waldo as Hatebeak’s Congo African grey parrot. The Flayrah article offers that comparison, but it does not establish that either group was the world’s only animal-fronted metal act.

Number of the Beak is the Hatebeak release VICE covered in 2015. That report confirms the release at the time; it does not establish its current availability from any particular seller or streaming service. Harrison’s description of the group’s approach was simple: “As long as we keep having fun and keep getting a kick out of it, we’re in good shape.”
