The reports confirm her announcement and stated intention, but do not confirm that authorities received the medal.
What did Livia Giuggioli do?
In an Instagram video posted on 24 September 2025, Giuggioli shredded her MBE certificate and announced that she was returning the medal. The distinction matters: she destroyed the certificate, not the medal, and the reporting describes an intention to return the medal rather than a confirmed delivery or formal acceptance.
The Standard’s report and The Guardian’s account both describe her announcement. Neither confirms that the medal reached UK authorities.
Why did she object to the royal welcome?
Giuggioli said she could not reconcile being part of the British Empire with the events surrounding Trump’s visit. She argued that the royal welcome appeased and honoured him, giving legitimacy to views and actions she strongly opposed. She also contrasted the welcome with what she regarded as King Charles’s record on social and environmental justice. These are Giuggioli’s judgments, not findings established by the event record.

As reported by The Standard, Giuggioli described the welcome as “a frightening and cowardly display of appeasing someone who stands for the obliteration of the natural world and the most vulnerable people on earth.” The Guardian quoted her saying: “I cannot reconcile being part of the British empire, particularly in light of what happened last week.”
What was the state visit?
King Charles III and Queen Camilla hosted US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump for a state visit on 17 and 18 September 2025. The Royal Family’s official account records engagements in Windsor, including a welcome, carriage procession, guard of honour and state banquet. Giuggioli’s protest followed those official events by several days.
