Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen plays Jesus in The Resurrection of the Christ, Mel Gibson’s two-part follow-up to The Passion of the Christ (2004). He takes over the role from Jim Caviezel, who portrayed Jesus in the original. The sequel is a new story set after the crucifixion, not a recast version of the 2004 film.
Who plays Jesus in The Resurrection of the Christ?
Ohtonen is the new Jesus. The announced cast also includes Mariela Garriga as Mary Magdalene, Kasia Smutniak as Mary, Pier Luigi Pasino as Peter and Riccardo Scamarcio as Pontius Pilate. Rupert Everett is in the cast as well, though Variety’s October 2025 report did not specify his role. LEONINE Studios, the German theatrical distributor, announced the cast; Variety reported the broader recasting.
In a September 2026 interview with CBN, Gibson praised Ohtonen’s performance as “at once human and kind of like and in an odd way a kind of peaceful detachment about what he does.” That is Gibson’s characterization of the performance, not a description of Ohtonen’s role beyond playing Jesus.
Why was Jim Caviezel recast?
Variety reported that the sequel’s main ensemble was entirely recast. An unnamed person close to the production told the trade publication that the story begins only three days after the crucifixion, making recasting preferable to extensive digital de-aging, which would have been costly. That explanation comes from an anonymous production source; Gibson and Lionsgate have not publicly given that reason in the cited reporting.

What is the sequel about?
The Resurrection of the Christ follows the 2004 film and centers on the Resurrection. Variety’s casting report places the start three days after the crucifixion. Gibson told CBN that the screenplay draws on the four Gospels, Acts, letters of St. Paul and St. Peter, and writings by other Christian historical figures. He described the two films as making room for broader context beyond a strictly linear narrative.
Gibson also said his approach is intended to remain within Catholic and Eastern Orthodox traditions while imagining some historical gaps. This is his account of the creative approach, not a claim of historical verification or a theological consensus. He described the adaptation challenge to CBN this way: “The event itself is almost impossible to comprehend. And so how do we make that communicable not only for ourselves but for other people?”
