Beetlejuice Beetlejuice brings Tim Burton back to the Deetz family, pairing the return of Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara with Jenna Ortega as Lydia’s daughter, Astrid. Its most promising idea is that Astrid—not another trip down memory lane—sets the supernatural trouble in motion. The result is a sequel whose appeal lies in Burton’s peculiar comic world and the prospect of seeing a new generation collide with it.
A new Deetz family problem opens the door to the Afterlife
Directed by Burton, the 2024 sequel picks up with Lydia Deetz and her daughter Astrid. According to the official film synopsis, Astrid discovers a miniature model of the town; a portal to the Afterlife opens accidentally, bringing the supernatural back into the family’s life.

That setup gives the film a useful way to revisit its original world without making Astrid merely a passenger in Lydia’s story. The miniature model is a neat bridge between the ordinary town and its uncanny counterpart, while the accidental opening promises the kind of escalating mischief the premise calls for. Whether the family’s strands feel like lively chaos or too many competing storylines is the key question for viewers hoping for more than familiar faces and references.
The returning cast meets a new center of gravity
Keaton returns as Beetlejuice, Ryder as Lydia Deetz and O’Hara as Delia Deetz; Ortega plays Astrid. The studio also names Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Arthur Conti and Willem Dafoe among the new cast. The story is credited to Alfred Gough, Miles Millar and Seth Grahame-Smith, with Gough and Millar writing the screenplay. The characters were created by Michael McDowell and Larry Wilson.

The sequel’s generational handoff is its clearest opportunity. Lydia’s history gives the story an emotional link to the earlier film, while Astrid’s discovery can make the strange world feel newly dangerous rather than simply nostalgic. Ortega’s role therefore matters to the film’s balance: the old cast supplies continuity, but Astrid needs room to register as a character with her own stakes.
Burton’s silliness is part of the point
In its August 28, 2024 review, Time describes the sequel as a return to Burton’s casual silliness and points to an operatic comic sequence set to Richard Harris’s version of “MacArthur Park.” That is one critic’s reading, not a measure of universal reaction, but it captures the kind of pleasure the movie is aiming for: comic excess and oddball spectacle rather than solemn supernatural lore.

That tone also sets a fair expectation. The film’s many plot threads may be a feature if their detours keep the world buoyant; they may feel crowded if they pull attention away from Astrid and Lydia. For viewers drawn to Burton’s grotesque, playful sensibility, the throwback approach is likely to be the attraction. Those looking for a tightly focused family drama may be less well served by a sequel built around supernatural commotion.

For UK viewers, the BBFC classifies the film as comedy, fantasy and horror and notes moderate horror, gore, violence, sex, drug references and language. Its advice mentions a comic sex scene without nudity or strong detail, suggested prescription-pill misuse, and a demon intending to marry a woman against her will. The BBFC also warns that flashing or flickering lights may affect people with photosensitive epilepsy.

Streaming availability depends on country and date. Warner Bros. Discovery announced a US Max streaming start for December 6, 2024, and Netflix Tudum reported US Netflix availability on May 6, 2025. Those are historical US service reports, not confirmation of where the film can be watched now or in another territory. The BBFC also lists a UK home-entertainment entry, but that does not establish a particular format, edition or current stock.
