Teddi Mellencamp addressed rumors of an affair with horse trainer Simon Schroeder in an August 2025 appearance on The Jamie Kern Lima Show, but she did not confirm or deny that the alleged affair happened. She said she had stayed quiet because of her children and acknowledged that she had done things that hurt other people.
What did Teddi Mellencamp say about the affair rumors?
In remarks reported by The Independent on August 6, 2025, Mellencamp said she had not spoken about the rumors “just because of the kids.” She added that she had never wanted anyone to have “a guarantee whether it happened or didn’t happen.”
She then acknowledged: “But what I can say is, did I do things that hurt other people? Yes.” She also said, “I think I was so broken as a human being during that part of my life that I did things out of my better judgment.” Those comments express remorse and acknowledge harm; they are not an unambiguous admission that the alleged affair took place.
Did she confirm the alleged affair?
No. Mellencamp did not give a yes-or-no answer in the reported August 2025 interview. Her earlier public response was similarly noncommittal: on the November 14, 2024 episode of Two Ts in a Pod, she said, “I’m not going to confirm or deny anything,” and said her children were the priority, according to Us Weekly.

The Independent reported that rumors involving Schroeder began circulating in November 2024, citing an insider’s account. That is an allegation reported in the press, not an independently established finding.
What did she mean by calling cancer “payback”?
Mellencamp said: “To this day, does it still hurt my heart, and I wonder if that’s why it got cancer? Yes, like it was my payback.” This was her personal expression of guilt and emotional pain. It is not evidence that a person’s conduct can cause cancer, and it should not be treated as a medical explanation for her illness.

She also described the strain of trying to limit the fallout, saying that trying to minimize everyone’s pain can end up maximizing it. She referred to the people affected as including herself, a significant other, children, and the other person’s partner and children.

The Independent reported that Mellencamp filed for divorce from Edwin Arroyave on November 1, 2024. It later reported that divorce proceedings were paused in February 2025 after her stage-four cancer diagnosis. The reporting places the affair rumors in the same broad period as the divorce, but does not establish that the allegation caused the divorce.
