Letshaba. It follows Naledi’s effort to lift his family out of poverty and the violent reversal that follows. The South African Department of Basic Education (DBE) publishes a separate “Mind the Gap” study guide to help learners analyse the play and practise exam questions.
What is Lejwe la Kgopiso?
It is a prescribed-literature drama for Grade 12 Sesotho Home Language. Pearson South Africa’s 2021 prescribed-literature catalogue identifies the play as a Grade 12 drama and lists ISBN 9780636179165. That ISBN identifies the catalogue entry; it is not a measure of the book’s popularity or impact.

The play and the DBE study guide are different publications. The play is the literary work by T. Letshaba. The guide is a learning resource that includes extracts from the drama alongside explanations and activities.
What is the play about?
The publisher’s synopsis centres on Naledi’s plan to help his family escape poverty. The plan backfires, and a man previously known as peace-loving becomes a killer. The DBE guide places the action in Kgotsong in a contemporary democratic era and describes poverty and deprivation as underlying sources of conflict that more powerful characters exploit.
#1 Best Overall
- 320-page workbook is divided into sections covering Phonics, Reading Skills & Parts of Speech; Math Basics; Time, Money & Fractions; and Story Problems
This premise invites learners to consider how hardship, pressure and personal choices affect responsibility. The available synopsis and guide support that broad framing, but not additional scene-by-scene plot claims or conclusions about every character’s fate.
What does the DBE Mind the Gap guide cover?
The DBE’s 2019 guide is a substantial study aid, not a replacement for the drama. It includes analysis of the title, plot, chapter or scene summaries, themes, message, characters, conflict and language, as well as practice questions with answers. The Department describes the Mind the Gap series as using simplified explanations and examples of likely examination questions with possible responses.
In the foreword, dated 14 November 2019 and attributed to Minister of Basic Education Matsie Angelina Motshekga, the guide says: “Consistent with the government’s commitment in promoting the indigenous languages that form the tapestry of our democratic landscape, this Mind the Gap Self study guide is a concrete demonstration of this commitment.”
How to use the play and guide together
- Read the assigned drama. Use the edition required by your school so that your references match the text your class is studying.
- Use the guide to check understanding. Work through its summaries and analysis after reading the relevant material, rather than treating a summary as a substitute for the play.
- Practise explaining evidence. For a long essay question (“potso e telele”), build an answer around a clear point, relevant evidence from the drama and an explanation of how that evidence supports your interpretation. The guide’s practice questions and possible responses can help you understand the expected form of an answer.
- Review the language and conflict sections. Use them to connect the way the drama is written with its characters, themes and tensions.
Play or study guide: which item do you need?
| Item | What it is for | Edition or identifier information |
|---|---|---|
| Drama by T. Letshaba | The original literary work for reading and classroom study. | Pearson South Africa’s 2021 catalogue lists ISBN 9780636179165 for its Grade 12 drama entry. |
| DBE “Mind the Gap” guide | A separate study aid with analysis, summaries and exam practice. | The DBE guide is a 2019 resource; no ISBN is stated in the cited material. |
| Maskew Miller Learning ePDF | A publisher-listed digital edition of the Grade 12 drama. | The listing describes a one-year licence and gives a separate ePDF identifier; the identifier itself is not stated here. |
Before buying or downloading a drama edition, compare the title, author, format and identifier with the edition your school requests. The publisher catalogue’s ISBN and the ePDF listing’s separate identifier refer to different listings, so do not assume they are interchangeable. Prices, stock and a school’s required edition can vary; the cited sources do not establish province-by-province prescription requirements.
Can learners share the DBE guide?
The guide identifies a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike licence. It may be shared and modified with attribution, but not sold or used commercially. The guide states: “This content may not be sold or used for commercial purposes.” It also says changes must be sent to the Department. Attribute the Department and the guide’s contributors when sharing it, and do not present altered material as an official unchanged copy.
