Sydney Sweeney said the backlash to her American Eagle jeans campaign surprised her, and described it as “surreal” when President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance weighed in. She made those comments in a November 2025 interview with GQ—months after Trump praised the ad in August. Her remarks were about the reaction and the political attention, not an endorsement of Trump’s views.
What did Sydney Sweeney say about Trump supporting the ad?
In her November 2025 GQ interview, Sweeney said she had not expected the response to the campaign. “I did a jean ad. I mean, the reaction definitely was a surprise, but I love jeans. All I wear are jeans. I’m literally in jeans and a T-shirt every day of my life.” When asked about Trump and Vance weighing in, she called it “surreal.” The Independent reported her comments.
Sweeney also said she put her phone away while filming Euphoria and did not see much of the controversy as it unfolded. The interview addressed the attention around the campaign; it did not amount to a statement of support for Trump or his politics.
Why did Trump praise the American Eagle campaign?
The campaign paired Sweeney with the phrase “great jeans,” a pun on “great genes.” A teaser discussed genes and inherited traits before turning to the line “My jeans are blue.” The wording led some critics to say the campaign evoked eugenics or racialized standards of beauty, particularly alongside Sweeney’s appearance. Other commenters argued that the criticism read too much into a jeans advertisement. Those were competing interpretations; neither establishes the campaign’s intent. The Associated Press reported American Eagle’s response, while Axios covered the debate.

In August 2025, reporters asked Trump about reports that Sweeney was registered as a Republican. He praised the campaign, posting that it had the “HOTTEST ad out there” and saying, “If Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican, I think her ad is fantastic.” The remarks were Trump’s, reported at the time by ABC News; they do not show that Sweeney endorsed his politics.
What did American Eagle say about the criticism?
American Eagle said the campaign “is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story.” The company also said it wanted to celebrate everyone wearing its jeans with confidence. Its response stated the brand’s position but did not settle the disagreement over how viewers understood the genes-and-jeans wordplay.

How did Sweeney later address the controversy?
A separate interview with PEOPLE, reported by Rolling Stone in December 2025, included a more explicit clarification than her November GQ comments. Sweeney said she did not support views some people connected to the campaign and reflected that her silence had widened the divide. She said, “I’m against hate and divisiveness.” Rolling Stone Australia reported the later interview. That December statement should be distinguished from her earlier description of the political attention as “surreal.”
