Kendall Jenner wore a black Givenchy haute couture gown designed by Alexander McQueen for the house’s Fall 1999 collection to the 2024 Met Gala. The archival dress featured a low back and waist cutouts; Vogue reported that Jenner was the first person to wear this particular garment, while Winona Ryder had worn a replica of the design in 1999.
What dress did Kendall Jenner wear to the 2024 Met Gala?
It was a floor-length Givenchy haute couture gown from Alexander McQueen’s Fall 1999 collection. McQueen was Givenchy’s creative director from 1996 to 2001, according to Vogue’s account of the gown. The black dress had a sculptural collar and shoulders, gold-toned detailing, waist cutouts and a revealing low back.
The gown was made from nude and black tulle, with more than 100,000 black and brass beads and sequins hand-embroidered over 500 hours, Vogue reported. British Vogue reported the same construction details.
Was the archival dress really worn for the first time?
Vogue reported that the particular garment Jenner wore had never previously been worn. The Fall 1999 collection was presented on mannequins rather than shown on a runway, and the gown remained in Givenchy’s archive. Jenner described it in a Vogue video interview as, “I’m the first human to wear it.” The first-wear account is Vogue’s reporting of Givenchy’s archive history, rather than an independently established museum record.

A 1999 Flaunt Magazine photograph shows Winona Ryder in a similar design. Vogue reported that Givenchy confirmed Ryder wore a replica, not the archival original. So the design had appeared publicly before Jenner wore it, but the archived gown itself was reportedly new to being worn.
Why did the cutouts stand out?
The gown’s low back and cutouts at the waist made its silhouette unusually revealing for a preserved couture archive piece. Jenner told Vogue that “the way it’s cut in the back, and the low butt—all these beautiful things feel very me.” Stylist Dani Michelle described her approach this way: “No matter what Kendall does with her style, it has to speak to her—the look has to come alive.”

Givenchy did not permit alterations because of the garment’s preserved condition, Vogue reported. Jenner said it fit without tailoring. After the gala, the gown was returned to Givenchy’s archive.
How did the gown relate to the 2024 Met Gala theme?
The gala took place alongside the Costume Institute exhibition “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” and its dress code was “The Garden of Time.” The exhibition examined how people can engage with clothing that can no longer be worn. Jenner said the theme led her to archival fashion: “The theme, to me, screamed archival.” In Vogue’s on-carpet video, she identified the look as “Givenchy, it’s archival McQueen from 1999.”

Vogue described this as Jenner’s 10th Met Gala and her first time wearing an archival look. The gown’s history and preservation made it distinct from a new outfit merely inspired by a past design.

No. At the after-parties, Jenner wore a separate white Givenchy by Alexander McQueen dress from Spring/Summer 1997, with an angel-wing bodice. It was a different look from the black 1999 archival gown, as noted by Vogue and British Vogue.
