Its familiar shadow traits include stubbornness, secrecy, suspicion, jealousy, and a tendency to control. These are symbolic descriptions of a zodiac archetype—not established predictions about any person born under the sign.
What are Scorpios known for?
Scorpio descriptions often center on depth and focus: the archetypal Scorpio is said to notice what others miss, commit strongly to people and goals, and persist through difficulty. Popular astrology guides also associate the sign with privacy, ambition, empathy, protectiveness, and intuition. The emphasis differs from one guide to another, and none of these qualities should be assumed of every Scorpio.
Commonly described strengths
- Determination: Scorpio is often depicted as persistent and able to sustain attention on a difficult goal.
- Loyalty and devotion: Astrology guides commonly describe the sign as committed and protective toward people it cares about.
- Perceptiveness: The archetype is associated with close observation and sensitivity to emotional undercurrents.
- Emotional depth: Scorpio is portrayed as feeling things intensely, even when it keeps those feelings private.
Commonly described challenges
- Stubbornness: Persistence can be framed as rigidity or difficulty changing course.
- Secrecy and suspicion: Privacy may be portrayed as guardedness or mistrust.
- Jealousy or control: Some descriptions warn that intense commitment can become possessive or controlling.
- Fixation: Focus can turn into difficulty letting go of a conflict or goal.
These are recurring motifs in popular astrology writing, not measured traits or diagnoses. A Sun sign alone cannot establish how someone behaves in a relationship, handles conflict, or makes decisions.
What are Scorpio dates?
Astrology.com and Allure give Scorpio dates as October 23 through November 21; The Old Farmer’s Almanac uses October 23 through November 22. Those are conventional tropical-zodiac ranges, and the end date can vary by source and year. People born near a boundary may want to check a year-specific chart rather than rely on a general date list.

What does Scorpio’s element, modality, and ruling planet mean?
In Astrology.com’s framework, Scorpio is a fixed water sign, traditionally ruled by Mars and modernly co-ruled by Pluto. These categories explain the symbolism behind many standard trait descriptions; they are not scientific causes of personality.
- Water is associated in astrology with intuition, imagination, emotional connection, and feeling.
- Fixed signs are associated with endurance and persistence, which can also be interpreted as resistance to change.
- Mars and Pluto supply the sign’s traditional and modern ruling-planet symbolism within astrology.
Scorpio the zodiac sign is an astrological category; it should not be confused with the astronomical constellation. Neither the sign’s symbols nor its planetary associations establish that a person will have particular traits.

Are Scorpio traits scientifically established?
No: the cited material does not establish that being born under Scorpio predicts an individual’s personality. A 2001 study examined how favorable astrologically derived personality descriptions related to acceptance of astrology. Its abstract reports that participants judged descriptions for odd-numbered Sun signs more favorably than those for even-numbered signs, and that people born under odd-numbered signs expressed more belief in astrology. That finding concerns description favorability and belief; it does not validate Scorpio-specific predictions. Read the study abstract in Personality and Individual Differences.
What do popular astrology guides emphasize?
The sources share a broad portrait of intensity and commitment but differ in details and date boundaries. Their descriptions are interpretations within popular astrology, not competing scientific assessments of people.

What does Scorpio compatibility mean?
Popular compatibility traditions often pair Scorpio with fellow water signs Cancer and Pisces; some also describe earth signs as complementary. The cited sources do not establish a single, consistent ranking. Treat these matchups as entertainment-oriented interpretations, not reliable assessments of whether two people will get along. Shared values, communication, and how people treat each other offer more useful information than Sun signs alone.
