Al Jean joked that he was proud to be part of a “prediction” after a viral image compared Lisa Simpson’s presidential outfit with Kamala Harris’s purple inauguration look. The comparison referenced the 2000 episode “Bart to the Future”—but Lisa, not Harris, becomes president in the episode, and it never depicts or names Harris.
What did ‘The Simpsons’ writer Al Jean say?
In July 2024, after President Joe Biden withdrew from the presidential race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, writer and executive producer Al Jean shared a side-by-side image of Lisa Simpson and Harris. Jean captioned it: “The Simpsons ‘prediction’ I’m proud to be a part of.” The Independent reported Jean’s post and the immediate context.

The quotation marks around “prediction” matter: Jean was playing along with a visual resemblance, not claiming the show had forecast Harris’s candidacy or a particular election result.
Which episode was the comparison about?
Lisa becomes president in ‘Bart to the Future’
“Bart to the Future,” a Season 11 episode, first aired on March 19, 2000. In its flash-forward, Lisa is president and succeeds a fictional President Trump. She faces a budget crisis left by her predecessor. The episode does not show Harris or mention her. The Los Angeles Times describes the episode and the outfit comparison; TIME gives the episode’s date and premise.

The resemblance is in the clothing
Lisa wears a purple suit or blazer with pearls and pearl earrings. Harris wore a similar purple coat, necklace, and pearl earrings at the 2021 inauguration, when she was sworn in as vice president. The match is an outfit resemblance; it is not a depiction of Harris in the episode. The comparison had already attracted attention in 2021, after Harris became the first woman sworn in as U.S. vice president, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Why did the episode put Trump before Lisa?
Writer Dan Greaney described the fictional Trump presidency as part of the episode’s satire and warning, rather than a forecast of a specific future. He said the idea “just seemed like the logical last stop before hitting bottom,” and that it fit “the vision of America going insane.” Greaney also explained: “What we needed was for Lisa to have problems that were beyond her fixing, that everything went as bad as it possibly could, and that’s why we had Trump be president before her.” TIME reported Greaney’s explanation.

Did Harris become president?
No. Donald Trump won the 2024 presidential election, receiving 312 Electoral College votes to Harris’s 226, according to the National Archives’ official 2024 results. The White House identifies Trump as the current president. The episode’s Lisa-centered story should not be confused with a real prediction that Harris would win the presidency.

Jean later put the show’s prediction lore in perspective: “Well, the predictions are accidental. We’re not from the future.” In an Associated Press report, current showrunner Matt Selman said, “The predictions are all fake now,” referring to AI-generated fakes circulating online. The Associated Press reported their comments in 2026.

This episode’s real ingredients are a satirical fictional presidency and a clothing resemblance that became viral years later. The available official election result settles the real-world outcome; no defensible statistic establishes that the show has predictive accuracy.
