Which museums are beyond Manhattan?
Several of the options above make worthwhile visits to other boroughs. In Brooklyn, choose between broad collections at the Brooklyn Museum and transit history at the New York Transit Museum. Queens has contemporary art at MoMA PS1, music history at the Louis Armstrong House Museum, and a farm setting at Queens County Farm Museum. The Bronx Museum offers contemporary art in the Bronx; Staten Island has both living history at Historic Richmond Town and hands-on exhibits at the Staten Island Children’s Museum. Factor travel time into your choice, especially if you are combining a museum with another borough visit.
How to choose the right museum for your visit
- Start with your main interest: art, history, science, music, design, transit, or activities for children.
- Match the format to your energy: a large collection, a historic house or site, a performance or event, and an interactive museum can make very different visits.
- Check the borough and route: travel time can shape how many places you can comfortably visit in a day.
- Allow for scale: an encyclopedic museum may reward a focused plan, while a single historic house or specialized museum can provide a more concentrated visit.
- Look up current exhibitions and events: temporary programming changes, and some museums offer performances, panels, workshops, or seasonal activities.
Which museums are free in New York City?
Admission terms depend on the museum, visitor eligibility, ticket type, and special programming; a museum may offer conditional suggested admission or free admission without that applying to every visitor or event. The New York City Department of Cultural Affairs’ free and suggested admission page, last updated in July 2026, gives examples including suggested admission at The Met and The Cloisters for New York State residents and students from New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, and suggested admission for New York State residents at the American Museum of Natural History. It lists MoMA PS1 as free. These examples are conditional, not universal ticket rules. Check the city’s current free and suggested admission guidance and the museum’s official visitor information before relying on a price or free-entry policy; the department advises confirming details with each venue because policies can change. Special programs may require separate admission.
