The Sanderson sisters’ abilities work as a complementary trio, not as a formally published power chart: Winifred leads their spellcasting through her spell book, Mary can sniff out children, and Sarah is associated with a song that bewitches children. The films show these traits in different ways, so it is useful to separate what is demonstrated from what viewers infer.
What powers does Winifred Sanderson have?
Winifred is the sisters’ leader and the one most directly associated with the spell book. In the original film, the book is identified as hers, and she uses it to direct the group’s magical plans. That makes her clearest defining ability her book-centered spellcasting and command of the trio—not a complete, neatly itemized list of independent powers.

The available official Disney material identifies the sisters and their story but does not publish a full inventory of Winifred’s spells or their limits. It is safest to describe particular magic as something she carries out through the book when the film shows it, rather than treating every spell as a separate permanent ability.
What can Mary Sanderson smell?
Mary’s distinctive ability is smelling out children. In the 1993 film, she says, “I smell a child,” making the trait both a recognizable tracking gag and the clearest spoken evidence for a sister-specific sense.

#1 Best Overall
- Conjured up by some unsuspecting pranksters, a tricky trio of 300-year-old witches set out to cast a spell on the town and reclaim their youth. But first, they must get their act together and outwit three kids and a talking cat.
The line supports the idea that Mary can detect children by scent in the film’s context. It does not establish that she can locate every person, identify supernatural beings, or track anyone at any distance.
Can Sarah Sanderson’s song hypnotize children?
Sarah is associated with a bewitching song used to lure children. It is reasonable to describe the song as enchanting within the film’s story, but that should not be expanded into a general power to hypnotize anyone or control people in other situations. The films do not provide a systematic explanation of how the effect works or define precise limits.

How do the sisters’ magic and the Black Flame Candle fit together?
The Black Flame Candle is central to the sisters’ return: Disney’s official sequel description says it resurrected the 17th-century witches. That is a story mechanism for bringing the trio back, distinct from the individual traits associated with Winifred, Mary, and Sarah.
The films do not present a universal ruleset that ranks the sisters’ powers or explains every magical effect. Their roles are better understood through what each contributes to the group: Winifred directs spells, Mary helps find children, and Sarah’s song is associated with luring them.

How the three sisters’ abilities compare
| Sister | Clearest associated ability | Mechanism or role | What the film supports |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winifred | Directing spellcasting | Her spell book is central to her role as leader. | The original film transcript identifies the book as hers; it does not establish a complete spell inventory. |
| Mary | Smelling out children | A child-tracking sense presented as a comic trait. | Her “I smell a child” line supports the trait, not an unlimited ability to detect anyone. |
| Sarah | A song associated with luring children | Song-based enchantment within the film’s story. | Associated with the bewitching song; broader hypnosis or control powers and exact limits are not established. |
This is a practical comparison of the sisters’ on-screen roles, not an official ranking or power scale.
