That account came after he had publicly said in 2017 that he was experiencing dementia. The statements document a change in what Cassidy said; the available reporting does not independently establish whether he had a clinical dementia diagnosis.
What Cassidy said about drinking and dementia
The Associated Press reported on June 6, 2018, that the documentary included a recording in which Cassidy said he had still been drinking in the last years of his life and had not been truthful with friends and family about stopping. In the same recording, he said: “There is no sign of dementia of me having dementia at this stage of my life.” Associated Press report

Cassidy also described what happened during a hospitalization as “complete alcohol poisoning.” That phrase is his own account in the recording as reported by the AP, not a medical examiner’s finding. Associated Press report
How his public statements changed
February 2017: Cassidy said he had early-stage dementia
A Paramount Press Express announcement for a March 1, 2017, Dr. Phil interview said Cassidy had recently announced that he was suffering from dementia. The announcement quoted him saying, “I have the beginning stages… the early stages of dementia.” It also said the interview would address whether his past alcoholism had contributed to his condition. June 2018: a recording carried a different account
In its report about David Cassidy: The Last Session, the AP described Cassidy’s later denial of dementia and his admission that he had continued drinking. The documentary was scheduled to air on A&E on June 11, 2018. Associated Press report
The Washington Post also reported Cassidy’s later account that a hospital head doctor had linked the symptoms he had called dementia to alcoholism. That is a newspaper’s account of Cassidy’s statement, not an independently available medical record. The Washington Post

What is known about Cassidy’s death—and what is not
Cassidy died on November 21, 2017, aged 67. The Los Angeles Times reported that his publicist, Jo-Ann Geffen, confirmed he died of liver failure after hospitalization for multiple organ failure involving his liver and kidneys. The AP separately reported organ failure. These are attributed descriptions of his death; they should not be conflated with Cassidy’s own phrase “complete alcohol poisoning” in the documentary recording. Los Angeles Times Associated Press
The available reports establish that Cassidy publicly described himself as having early-stage dementia in 2017 and later denied having it in a recording. They do not provide clinical records resolving whether he had dementia or what caused the symptoms he discussed. His later denial is therefore not, by itself, proof that he never had the condition.
