The accounts are allegations, not independently established facts; Trump’s campaign called them fabricated.
What Fred Trump III said happened
Trump III described two separate conversations. The first, he said, took place after a May 2020 Oval Office meeting with disability advocates and others discussing the needs and costs of caring for people with significant disabilities. He alleged that his uncle made a disparaging general comment about people with disabilities afterward. TIME published Trump III’s first-person account of the exchange, and ABC News also interviewed him about it. TIME ABC News
Trump III said the second conversation happened later, during a phone call about the family medical fund that helped support William’s care. According to his account, the fund was running low and Donald Trump made a remark specifically about William. Trump III said his uncle had contributed to the fund consistently before that call. The Washington Post separately reported Trump III’s description of regular contributions, with the amount undisclosed. The Washington Post
What is known about William and the family fund
Fred Trump III and his wife Lisa welcomed William in 1999. In his first-person TIME account, Trump III said William was diagnosed with infantile spasms at three months and that his medical team identified a KCNQ2 mutation years later. Those details reflect the father’s account, rather than an independently reviewed medical record.

Trump III described the family medical fund as crucial to William’s care. The Washington Post also reported that, after Fred Trump III and his sister Mary challenged their grandfather Fred Trump Sr.’s estate arrangements, Donald Trump and his siblings denied the allegation and cut off family medical insurance important to William’s care. That dispute is separate background to the later alleged comments.
The Post reported in 2024 that William was 25, lived in a group home and was doing relatively well medically, according to his father. That is a report about his circumstances at that time, not a current update.

How the claims were answered
ABC News quoted Trump campaign Communications Director Steven Cheung responding: “This is completely fabricated and total fake news of the highest order.” The Washington Post reported that Donald Trump said he had helped Fred Trump III and contributed to William’s fund, but that Trump and his spokesman did not directly answer the newspaper’s question about the specific alleged remarks.
The accounts therefore remain disputed in public reporting. TIME’s piece is Trump III’s own narrative, not independent corroboration of private conversations; ABC News supplies the campaign’s explicit denial, while the Post reports the separate fund context and the response it received.

Why Trump III spoke publicly
The account appeared as Trump III’s memoir, All in the Family: The Trumps and How We Got This Way, was being published. He told the Post, “I have stayed quiet for a very long time,” and described the book as “the good, the bad and the jaw-dropping.” He also said he hoped speaking out would encourage discussion of support for families of people with disabilities.
The memoir is the setting for Trump III’s account, not independent proof of the alleged conversations. Readers can distinguish the sources by their roles: TIME presents his first-person narrative, ABC News reports his interview and the campaign’s denial, and the Post reports the family-fund context and Trump’s response.
