Caroline Kennedy publicly remembered her daughter Tatiana Schlossberg at the 2026 John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award ceremony at the Kennedy presidential library in Boston. Kennedy spoke of Schlossberg’s service on the library’s board and the example she set in her life and work.

What Caroline Kennedy said about Tatiana Schlossberg

At the ceremony, Kennedy first thanked family members whose support, she said, had helped keep her father’s spirit alive and made the library a “living memorial.” She then turned specifically to Tatiana:

“Most of all, we remember Tatiana, who served on the board of this library, and represented everything my parents stood for in her beautiful, amazing and too-short life.”

The Independent reported Kennedy’s remarks on June 1, 2026. Her tribute linked Schlossberg’s work at the library with the values Kennedy said her parents had stood for.

Who was Tatiana Schlossberg?

Schlossberg was an environmental journalist and author, the daughter of Caroline Kennedy and Edwin Schlossberg, and the granddaughter of President John F. Kennedy. She reported for The New York Times and wrote about how ordinary habits can carry less visible environmental costs.

Her book on everyday environmental impact

Her 2019 book, Inconspicuous Consumption: The Environmental Impact You Don’t Know You Have, examined the environmental effects embedded in everyday activities. The Washington Post reported that the book received the Society of Environmental Journalists’ Rachel Carson Environment Book Award in 2020.

Her illness and death

Schlossberg died on December 30, 2025, aged 35, according to the Associated Press. The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation announced her death that day with a family statement: “Our beautiful Tatiana passed away this morning. She will always be in our hearts.” The announcement did not state a cause or location of death.

In November 2025, Schlossberg publicly described her illness in the first-person New Yorker essay “A Battle with My Blood.” She wrote that she had been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in May 2024, after giving birth to her second child. Coverage also reported chemotherapy, stem-cell transplants and clinical-trial treatment; the essay is the primary account of her diagnosis.

A public remembrance of a journalist and author

Kennedy’s words at the 2026 ceremony offered a public remembrance centered on Schlossberg’s service to the library and the life she had built as a journalist and author. Her environmental writing remains a substantial part of that public record: it brought attention to impacts that can be difficult to see in the routines of daily life.
