Thomas Jane is reported to play Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy and Kai Murakami to play Hikaru Sulu in the final episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Both are set to debut in the show’s sixth-episode fifth season, which Paramount has identified as its final season. The casting is confirmed in reporting; what the two characters do in the finale has not been disclosed.
Who is playing McCoy and Sulu?
TrekCore reported on Dec. 23, 2025, that Thomas Jane will portray Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy and Kai Murakami will portray Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu in the series finale. TVLine reported the same day that both actors will make their Strange New Worlds debuts in the final episode of season five. TVLine also described the role as Murakami’s television debut in the series.
TrekCore’s casting report and TVLine’s report identify the actors and roles, but neither supplies details of their scenes.
What is known about the final season?
Paramount announced on June 12, 2025, that season five would be the show’s final season and consist of six episodes. The McCoy and Sulu casting reports place their appearances in that season’s last episode. No season-five release date is established in the cited reports.

Paramount’s announcement also includes a joint statement from executive producers Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers and Alex Kurtzman describing the series’ commitment to curiosity, hope and the possibility of a better future.
How the finale fits the Enterprise timeline
Strange New Worlds follows Captain Christopher Pike, Spock and Number One before Captain James T. Kirk boards the Enterprise, according to Paramount Global Content’s series page. TVLine quoted executive producer Akiva Goldsman saying the showrunners would try to reach “Kirk’s first day of command” by the end of season five. That describes an intended broad endpoint, not a disclosed finale plot or confirmation of exactly how Kirk’s command begins.

What the casting does—and does not—confirm
McCoy and Sulu are familiar members of the original Star Trek crew, but their reported appearances do not establish that the finale will reunite the full Original Series crew. Nor do the reports confirm a spin-off or that the episode functions as a backdoor pilot.
TrekCore raises a continuity question about the Enterprise medical team: Dr. Joseph M’Benga holds the chief medical officer role in the show’s current cast context. That is a question about how the story may handle the transition, not evidence of a confirmed problem or an answer about the finale. The available reports do not say how McCoy or Sulu enter the story, what scenes they share, or what happens to the existing crew.
