“Deadheads for Kamala” was an unofficial, fan-organized online event held on August 13, 2024, in support of Kamala Harris’s presidential run. It was a two-hour program of music, guests and conversations—not a Grateful Dead band event and not an upcoming rally.
What was Deadheads for Kamala?
The gathering brought together fans and people connected to the Grateful Dead community for a virtual program supporting Harris’s 2024 campaign. Broadcaster Steven Leventhal came up with the idea after seeing other online events backing Harris. The invitation described it as an unofficial fan event, unaffiliated with the Grateful Dead. Rolling Stone’s August 3, 2024 coverage reported the event’s origins; the Dead Heads for Democracy event page confirms it took place.

Organizers branded the event “Dead Heads for Kamala” and “Dead Heads For Democracy.” It was a political gathering organized by fans, rather than a concert or an event presented by the band.
When did it happen, and why was the date confusing?
The event took place online on August 13, 2024. Early publicity created conflicting dates: an event graphic announced August 1, while the invitation link gave August 13. Leventhal told Rolling Stone, “I jumped the gun a little bit.” The event’s retrospective page confirms August 13 as the date it was held.

- Experience the transformative height of the Dead’s musical power with Merriweather 6/30/85.TFeaturing favorites like “Sugar Magnolia,” “Cryptical Envelopment,” and what most Dead Heads consider thee best version of “Shakedown Street” ever performed by the Grateful Dead.
The listed organizing committee included Leventhal, David Gans, promoter Peter Shapiro, Laina Cohn and Nancy Rotering. Advance coverage by Rolling Stone named Mandy Patinkin among expected participants, but that is not the same as the event site’s retrospective list of people who appeared. Patinkin told Rolling Stone that he had never attended a Grateful Dead show and knew the group’s work through a song he learned for a film.
What did the organizers hope to create?
Leventhal recalled joking to his wife, “Gosh, we should do Deadheads for Kamala.” Patinkin described his hope for the event as “one hell of a fun phone call or Zoom.” Those comments capture its fan-led, conversational premise: a virtual gathering combining music, discussion and support for Harris’s campaign.
