‘Squid Game’ Season 2 Review: Less Bold, but Still Brutal

Season 2 trades some of Season 1’s shock for a more purposeful, politically charged return—though its slow build and familiar game cycle may test viewers’ patience.

Spoiler-light verdict: Squid Game Season 2 is worth watching if you want to see Gi-hun return with a purpose beyond survival. It is a more openly political continuation, anchored by Lee Jung-jae’s changed performance and fresh player dynamics. But the original season’s shock of discovery is gone, and the long approach to the games can make this chapter feel less urgent and more familiar.

What Season 2 is about

Three years after winning the contest, Seong Gi-hun (Player 456) abandons his plan to leave for the United States and returns with a mission to confront the system behind the games. Detective Hwang Jun-ho is also back, pursuing his own search. The fictional prize remains 45.6 billion won. Netflix’s Season 2 guide sets up the continuation without making it a simple replay of the first season: Gi-hun enters the familiar world with a new objective.

What feels different from Season 1

Gi-hun returns changed

Season 1 followed Gi-hun as an indebted man caught in a deadly contest he did not understand. Season 2 begins with someone who knows what the games are and has chosen to go back. That reversal shifts the tension from discovery toward whether his determination can change anything.

Creator and director Hwang Dong-hyuk says the deaths Gi-hun witnessed have altered him: “There’s something inside him that has just been broken.” Lee Jung-jae describes a character whose determination contrasts with his earlier optimism, while noting that Gi-hun’s kindness and instinct to help others still surface. That friction gives the season a useful emotional question: can a damaged person resist becoming as ruthless as the system he wants to stop? Hwang and Lee discuss the character in Netflix Tudum’s interview.

The games become a debate about choice

Hwang says the players’ X/O votes are central to the season’s divisive question. The contest is not only a test of individual survival; it also puts collective choice and responsibility on screen. The premise gives the story a more explicit social argument than the first season’s initial puzzle-box appeal. Whether that argument lands depends on how much weight a viewer gives the new divisions among players and how much feels like the story stating its point directly.

Hwang describes the season as a reflection of the present: “The world is crazy now. And this [season] is crazy because it’s based on the world as we live in now.”

Is it as good as Season 1?

Not in the same way. Season 1 had the advantage of introducing the deadly-game premise and its rules; Season 2 inherits a world viewers already know. It tries to replace surprise with Gi-hun’s changed purpose, the choices players make together, and a larger ensemble. That can make the continuation feel more morally charged, but it cannot recreate the first season’s discovery.

Rotten Tomatoes’ season-level Tomatometer, checked October 4, 2026, lists Season 2 at 84%, compared with 95% for Season 1 and 80% for Season 3. These are live critic-aggregation percentages, not audience scores or a measure of every viewer’s opinion; they can change. The figures offer context, not a verdict on which season you will prefer. Where the season can lose momentum

The clearest critical reservation is pacing. In her TIME review, Judy Berman argues that the season takes too long to return to the games and repeats a “play, murder, rage, repeat” pattern. She notes that two of the seven episodes pass before the games begin. That is one critic’s assessment, not a consensus—but it names a real tradeoff in the setup. More time with Gi-hun’s plan and the returning world supports the season’s political emphasis, while also delaying the spectacle and escalating tension many viewers expect.

TIME also questions the relationship between the series’ critique of capitalism and the franchise’s merchandising and participatory spin-offs. That tension is worth considering, but it does not settle what the season itself achieves. Its strongest counterpoint is the shift from watching a trapped player learn the rules to watching a returning winner try to intervene in a system that can absorb resistance.

Does Season 2 end on a cliffhanger?

Spoilers below.

Yes. Season 2 does not resolve Gi-hun’s effort to stop the contest, leaving the story to continue in the final season. Netflix’s ending explainer says 182 players voted to leave in the first vote, and describes Gi-hun’s attempts to end the game through persuasion and force as unsuccessful. The unfinished outcome is part of the season’s design: it functions as a middle chapter rather than a self-contained finale. Read Netflix Tudum’s full ending explainer for more detail.

  • Gonggi Stone catching game (Korean Knucklebones) :Start the game by throwing five gong-gis onto the floor. Pick one gong-gi and throw it into the air. While this gong-gi is in the air, grab one that’s on the floor before catching the one in the air. Repeat this to clear the floor.
  • Jebi Kicks (Korean Hacky Sack) : Continuously kick ‘Jebi’ in the air without dropping. Whoever manages the most number of kicks wins.
  • Paeng-y (Spinning Tops) : Prepare by winding a rope around the bottom of the top. Then in one swift movement, yank on the free end of the rope to make the top spin.
  • Biseokchigi : Knock down the opponents’ Biseok(rocks) in 18 steps. Each step consists of stably resting the biseok on a body part and moving to opponent’s biseok to knock them down.
  • DDAKJI : It's involves two playing tiles of different colors. The point of the game is to flip over the other player's tile, by hitting it with your tile from above. As easy as the rules are, it's actually quite a challenging game that takes a lot more skill than you would think - but no worries, I'll give you a tip later to maximize our chances of winning this pastime.
