On October 4, 2017, Eric Church honored victims of the Las Vegas Route 91 Harvest shooting during a performance at Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry. He pointed to two empty seats reserved for Sonny and Heather Melton, then introduced a song he had written in their honor, “Why Not Me.”
Why Eric Church’s Nashville performance mattered
Church had performed at the Route 91 Harvest festival two days before the October 1 shooting. The connection made the Opry performance more than a routine concert: he spoke about the people in the Las Vegas crowd as his fans and addressed the loss and fear surrounding the attack. His Route 91 appearance is also listed in a retrospective account on Church’s official site.

Church said, “Those were my people. Those were my fans. I didn’t want to be here tonight. I didn’t want to play guitar,” according to a CNN transcript published October 5, 2017. He explained why he had come: “I am going to tell you something, the reason I am here, the reason I am here tonight is because of Heather Melton, her husband Sonny, who died and every person that was there.”
The empty seats for Sonny and Heather Melton
Sonny and Heather Melton had tickets for Church’s Nashville performance. Church pointed out the seats they would have occupied. Sonny died in the shooting; Heather survived. The moment gave the tribute a specific, personal focus while Church also spoke in remembrance of everyone who had attended the festival.
#1 Best Overall
Contemporary accounts describe Church becoming visibly emotional as he addressed the crowd and the victims. The Washington Post’s October 5 report described him struggling to hold back tears. In its printed excerpt, the paper quoted him recalling the crowd with hands in the air and saying that the moment was frozen and could not be taken away by bullets.
“Why Not Me” was a live debut and tribute
Church introduced “Why Not Me” at the Opry and said he had written it in honor of the Meltons and the other people affected by the shooting. The performance was a debut of the song, as reported by CBS News, republishing an Associated Press report on October 6, 2017. That account documents its live debut; it does not establish a later commercial release or current streaming availability.

What the tribute was—and was not
The event was Church’s personal tribute during an Opry performance in Nashville, three days after the shooting. The reporting describes his remarks, the Meltons’ empty seats, and the song he introduced; it does not identify the performance as a formal memorial service. The focus was his connection to festivalgoers and his remembrance of those affected, not a recounting of the attack.
