Jay-Z said in December 2024 that he and Beyoncé would need to talk with their children about press coverage of a sexual-assault allegation against him. He denied the allegation, which appeared in a civil complaint concerning an alleged assault in 2000. The plaintiff voluntarily dismissed the lawsuit with prejudice on February 14, 2025; the filing gave no reason, and the dismissal was not a trial verdict.
What did Jay-Z say about talking to his children?
In a public statement denying the accusation, Jay-Z said he and Beyoncé would have to explain the claims and resulting press coverage to their children. People reported him saying: “My wife and I will have to sit our children down, one of whom is at the age where her friends will surely see the press and ask questions about the nature of these claims, and explain the cruelty and greed of people.”

That was Jay-Z’s description of how the publicity could affect his family. It was not an admission or a finding about whether the allegation was true.
What was Jay-Z accused of?
A civil complaint alleged that Jay-Z and Sean Combs sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl in 2000, after an MTV Video Music Awards after-party. The allegation was made by the plaintiff in the lawsuit; the fact that it appeared in a complaint does not independently establish that the events occurred. Jay-Z denied it publicly in December 2024.

The case began as a lawsuit against Combs filed in October 2024, according to the BBC. Jay-Z was added as a defendant in an amended complaint in December. On February 14, 2025, the plaintiff voluntarily dismissed the civil action with prejudice. The Associated Press reported that the dismissal filing did not state a reason.
Rank #2
A dismissal with prejudice ended this case in its current form and, as the BBC explained, means it cannot be refiled in that form. It is a procedural outcome, not a judicial decision about the truth or falsity of the allegation. The available reports do not establish why the plaintiff withdrew the case.
Quick Recap
How to understand the statements and outcome
- The complaint: The plaintiff’s account of an alleged assault, not a proven fact.
- Jay-Z’s response: A public denial and comments about the impact of the press coverage on his family, not proof for or against the allegation.
- The dismissal: The case’s procedural disposition, not a trial verdict or exoneration.
