Spoilers for the series finale. “And Just Like That…” ends with Carrie Bradshaw alone by choice, not reunited with Aidan or paired with someone new. In “Party of One,” she returns to her apartment, dances to Barry White, and rewrites her novel’s final line: “The woman realized she was not alone, she was on her own.” The series finale is season 3, episode 12, which aired August 14, 2025.
What happens in the “And Just Like That…” series finale?
“Party of One” puts marriage, partnership, and solitude side by side as the characters gather for Thanksgiving in separate celebrations. Carrie acknowledges that she may be alone for the rest of her life. Charlotte tries to reassure her, but Carrie recognizes that she had long assumed another relationship would arrive before long. Before the holiday, she delivers pies to her friends around New York.

Carrie also tells Adam she wants her renovated garden to feel wilder and more like her. At home, she keeps her shoes on, turns on the karaoke machine, and dances alone to Barry White’s “You’re the First, the Last, My Everything,” while the episode cuts between her and her friends’ gatherings. She then changes the ending of the novel she has been writing through the season. The original Sex and the City theme plays over the end credits.
Where the other characters end up
- Miranda and Joy: Their Thanksgiving is disrupted by Brady, his pregnant former girlfriend, the other guests, and an overflowing toilet. Joy’s dog needs surgery; the procedure goes well, and she later joins Miranda’s family gathering. Miranda remains hopeful about their relationship and her future grandchild.
- Charlotte and Harry: They reconnect sexually after Harry’s prostate cancer treatment and share a family dinner with their daughters.
- Seema and Adam: Seema tells Adam that marriage is not a prerequisite for her to embrace their relationship.
- LTW and Herbert: After marital tension and a professional setback, they recommit to one another.
- Anthony and Giuseppe: They choose to face the future together.
What does Carrie’s final sentence mean?
“The woman realized she was not alone, she was on her own” is the closing line of Carrie’s novel epilogue. It reframes solitude as self-possession rather than abandonment. Carrie does not end the episode with Aidan, or with another new partner, and she does not write herself a conventional romantic resolution.

Showrunner Michael Patrick King described the ending as an evolution of the original Sex and the City finale. In that earlier ending, Carrie affirmed the importance of her relationship with herself while Mr. Big called to join her. King said the new endpoint was for her to recognize: “I’m OK if maybe no one else is coming.” That is an emotional statement about being able to live on her own, not evidence that she will never love again.
The garden keeps the practical future uncertain. King said its spring planting might be a man or a crocus: life may bring a relationship, another kind of change, or neither. The finale offers closure to Carrie’s expectation that a partner must arrive, while leaving what happens next unresolved.

King said the decision took shape while he was writing the season’s final episode. He consulted Sarah Jessica Parker, and they brought the decision to HBO Max leadership. The series order was extended by two episodes so the creative team could conclude the story. King described the finale as the right stopping point for the show’s world.
The announcement that season three would be the last came on August 1, 2025, less than two weeks before the finale. King said he and Parker had delayed the announcement so that the word “final” would not overshadow viewers’ experience of the season; announcing after episode 10 left two episodes for the audience to take in the ending.

Parker later said she was happy that Carrie ended on her own. She explained the decision to stop this way: “Because that’s where the story ended.” Parker said that continuing with familiar scenarios such as coffee-shop scenes could have felt exploitative, and that she and King considered ending the show the honorable choice. The stated explanation was a creative decision; the available reporting does not establish a hidden cancellation cause.
How the revival’s ending differs from the original
And Just Like That… debuted in 2021 as a continuation of Sex and the City, which ran on HBO from 1998 to 2004 for six seasons. The revival followed Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, and their extended circle as they navigated life and friendship in their 50s. Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis returned; Kim Cattrall was not a regular, though she made a brief cameo in season two.
The original series ended with Carrie expressing the importance of her relationship with herself as Big called. The revival’s finale takes that idea further: Carrie accepts that no partner may be on the way. It gives her a definitive emotional realization, but not a definitive account of the rest of her romantic life.
