Jeff Bezos did not pay MacKenzie Bezos $150 billion in cash. The 2019 settlement transferred ownership of Amazon shares: after court approval, about 4% of Amazon’s outstanding common stock was to be registered in MacKenzie’s name. Jeff retained voting authority over those shares under a disclosed agreement. The often-cited roughly $36 billion value was a market estimate for April 4, 2019—not a fixed cash award.
What did MacKenzie Bezos receive?
Amazon’s April 4, 2019 filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission said that, after court approval, shares representing approximately 4% of Amazon’s outstanding common stock would be registered in MacKenzie T. Bezos’s name as her separate property. The filing described the shares and their registration; it was not the divorce decree itself.
The Washington Post’s same-day account characterized the division as Jeff keeping 75% of the couple’s Amazon stock, while MacKenzie received about 4% of Amazon’s total outstanding stock. These figures describe different denominators: the 75% referred to the couple’s Amazon holdings, while 4% referred to all of Amazon’s outstanding shares.
Who controlled the shares’ votes?
Ownership and voting authority were separate. Amazon’s filing said Jeff retained sole voting authority over the shares registered to MacKenzie under a voting agreement and proxy. The filing noted exceptions, including shares she sold in the open market and shares she contributed to a qualifying charity that intended to sell them.

Where did the $150 billion figure come from?
The $150 billion wording is a wealth-scale framing, not the amount of a cash payment or a settlement value stated in Amazon’s filing. The filing disclosed a share allocation and governance terms; it did not establish a $150 billion transfer.
The Washington Post reported that MacKenzie’s stake was worth roughly $36 billion, using Amazon’s market value on April 4, 2019. That was a date-specific market estimate: the value of shares changes with the stock price, and the reported figure was not a cash amount fixed in the divorce decree.

What happened to other holdings?
The Washington Post reported that Jeff retained the couple’s interests in The Washington Post and Blue Origin, as well as voting power over their Amazon shares. Amazon’s filing, by contrast, focused on the anticipated registration of Amazon stock and the voting arrangement. The public documents discussed here do not provide a complete asset-by-asset account of the private settlement.
What is known about the timeline?
- January 9, 2019: The couple publicly announced plans to divorce after 25 years together, according to contemporaneous reporting.
- April 4, 2019: Amazon filed an 8-K reporting the anticipated registration of approximately 4% of its outstanding shares to MacKenzie after court approval, and disclosed Jeff’s voting authority. The couple also announced settlement terms that day.
- Expected decree: Amazon’s filing said a decree was expected in approximately 90 days. That was a forecast in the filing, not confirmation of the decree’s exact date.
What the public record does not establish
The reviewed filing and contemporaneous reporting do not disclose the parties’ private negotiation rationale or the complete settlement agreement. A report’s discussion of Washington’s general community-property framework, and a lawyer’s comments, do not establish why these terms were chosen. The available material also does not establish a prenup, a precise valuation method for the private settlement, or a $150 billion transfer.
