Amandla Stenberg released “Discourse,” a music video addressing racist comments directed at her amid debate over The Acolyte, on Juneteenth, June 19, 2024. TheWrap reported that it appeared after the show’s fourth episode premiered and quoted Stenberg saying she made the song and video in 72 hours. The video also revisits an older interview about The Hate U Give—a separate event from the reaction to The Acolyte.
What Stenberg’s “Discourse” video addressed
Stenberg’s video responded to racist comments she said she was receiving and to the wider online “discourse” around The Acolyte. TheWrap described a mix of reaction to the series, including canon complaints, alongside racist comments addressed by Stenberg. Its report quoted the chorus: “We so bored don’t f–k with yo discourse.” TheWrap’s June 21, 2024 report also reproduced her Instagram caption, in which she wrote, “Happy Juneteenth,” and said she had spent 72 hours making the song and video. That timing is Stenberg’s own reported account, not an independently measured production figure.

How the video connects to The Acolyte
The Acolyte premiered on Disney+ on June 4, 2024, according to ComicBook.com’s June 21 report. Stenberg played twin sisters Mae and Osha; StarWars.com’s official cast introduction, published June 10, confirms those roles and identifies Disney+ as the series’ premiere platform.
Stenberg’s release came on June 19, after episode four premiered, TheWrap reported. Her response concerned racist abuse directed at her, but that should not be collapsed into every negative reaction to the show. Coverage also described canon-related complaints and broader reception debates. A disagreement with a story choice or a negative review is not, by itself, evidence of racist harassment.

Why “Discourse” revisits the Trevor Noah interview
Part of the song looks back to Stenberg’s 2018 conversation with Trevor Noah about The Hate U Give. ComicBook.com connected the lyric “white people crying was the goal” to that discussion, in which Stenberg spoke about the film and its intended audience. The line is a brief lyric reference, not a substitute for the full interview’s context. Forbes’s June 21, 2024 commentary also discusses the video’s references to the earlier interview and misinformation; those interpretations are Forbes’s, rather than a direct statement of Stenberg’s full intent.

What the reports establish—and what they do not
- TheWrap reported the Juneteenth release, its timing after episode four, Stenberg’s caption, selected lyrics, and the presence of both canon complaints and racist comments in the surrounding reaction.
- StarWars.com confirms Stenberg’s roles as Mae and Osha and the show’s Disney+ premiere context.
- ComicBook.com and Forbes discuss the lyric’s connection to the 2018 interview, but the original interview and Instagram post were not independently available in these reports. The quoted excerpts should therefore be read as reported selections, not as the complete context of either item.
- The lyric’s reference to “20 million views” is not established by these reports as a verified platform count.
