The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion—the “Six Triple Eight”—was a predominantly Black, multi-ethnic, all-female Women’s Army Corps unit sent to Europe in 1945 to clear enormous backlogs of mail for U.S. service members and civilian workers. Its 855 members built a system that processed mail around the clock, first in Britain and then in France, while also confronting segregated conditions and limited recognition.

What was the Six Triple Eight?

The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion was a U.S. Army Women’s Army Corps unit formed in 1944. Its mission was to sort and deliver mail that had accumulated in European warehouses during World War II. The National Archives describes its 855 members as primarily Black; the veterans’ organization emphasizes that the unit was multi-ethnic, including at least one Puerto Rican woman and one Mexican woman. “All-Black” is therefore an imprecise shorthand for the battalion, although it was all-female.

Black organizations and advocates, including Mary McLeod Bethune and Eleanor Roosevelt, pressed for Black women to have opportunities to serve overseas. The battalion’s work became a consequential example of Black women’s military service. National Archives archivist Damani Davis has described the 6888th as a lesser-known contribution of Black women to the European war effort. Its motto captured the stakes of its assignment: “No mail, low morale.”

Why was the battalion sent to Europe?

Mail was a vital link between U.S. personnel overseas and their families, but wartime disruption, incomplete addresses and common names made delivery difficult. When the battalion reached Britain, warehouses in Birmingham held an estimated 18 million pieces of mail and packages. The backlog was expected to take six months to clear.

The battalion deployed on February 3, 1945, and arrived in Britain nine days later. Its members were assigned to solve the backlog at a scale that demanded both speed and reliable identification: a letter addressed to the wrong person—or left undelivered—could undermine the purpose of the whole effort.

How did the Six Triple Eight process so much mail?

A name index built for difficult cases

The unit created an index of more than seven million cards to help identify recipients whose names were similar, misspelled or incomplete. Cards connected names to military serial numbers and other clues drawn from incorrectly addressed mail. That directory let the women distinguish people with the same or nearly identical names and route correspondence more accurately.

Three shifts, seven days a week

The battalion worked three eight-hour shifts, seven days a week. The National Archives reports that it handled more than 65,000 pieces of mail per shift and cleared the British backlog in three months—half the six months originally anticipated. The three-month result refers to the British backlog, not the entirety of the battalion’s later work in France.

What conditions did the women face?

The work took place in inadequate conditions: accounts describe poor heating and lighting and windows covered to prevent light from showing outside. The women also encountered racial segregation in living and eating arrangements, as well as sexism in the military environment.

Major Charity Adams led a boycott of segregated facilities. The women established their own food hall, hair salon and refreshment bar. Adams’s leadership is central to the battalion’s history: she commanded a unit expected to deliver under pressure while navigating barriers that had little to do with sorting mail.

Where did the battalion go after Britain?

After V-E Day, the battalion crossed to France and worked in Rouen, where correspondence could be up to three years old. The National Archives says the Rouen backlog was cleared by October 1945. The unit then moved to Paris.

The battalion returned to the United States in February 1946 and was disbanded at Fort Dix without a public ceremony. Its members received the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.

How is the battalion remembered today?

Recognition came decades after the unit’s service. The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Congressional Gold Medal measure by a 422–0 vote on February 28, 2022; President Joe Biden signed it into law on March 14, 2022. The unanimous House vote and the president’s later signature were separate steps in the process.
