After producer Jon Landau died in July 2024, James Cameron, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet each paid tribute to him. Their remarks reflected different sides of a shared film history: Cameron spoke as Landau’s longtime producing partner, while DiCaprio and Winslet recalled the person behind the films.
James Cameron remembered a close friend and producing partner
Cameron and Landau worked together on Titanic and the Avatar films. In a statement reported by The Independent on July 8, 2024, Cameron called Landau his “closest collaborator of 31 years” and said: “I’ve lost a dear friend and my closest collaborator of 31 years. A part of myself has been torn away.”

TheWrap reported Cameron’s longer statement on July 7, 2024, including his description of Landau as “A great producer and a great human being.” Cameron also recalled what their work meant beyond making a film: “In the process we not only made a film, we forged a family.”
Leonardo DiCaprio praised Landau’s kindness and empathy
DiCaprio, who starred in Titanic, focused on Landau’s character. In remarks reproduced by The Independent, he described Landau as “an incredibly kind, wise, and empathetic soul, who wanted to create nothing but a positive impact on anyone or anything approached.” The report also said DiCaprio expressed condolences to Landau’s family.

Kate Winslet highlighted compassion and support for creative teams

TheWrap reported her remarks to Deadline, in which she called him “the kindest and best of men.” She added: “He was a man who was rich with compassion and exceptional at supporting and nurturing teams of phenomenal creative people.” Winslet also recalled that Landau valued family both at home and at work.
The films behind the tributes
Landau was a producer closely associated with Cameron on Titanic and the Avatar films. Their partnership helped bring Titanic to the screen; the film won 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, according to CBS News and the Associated Press, reporting on July 6, 2024. The same report described Landau as 63 at his death and noted three Oscar nominations and one Best Picture win for the Landau-Cameron partnership on Titanic.

The comments above were reported in the days following Landau’s death in July 2024; they are not new statements from 2026. The cited coverage establishes those contemporaneous remarks, not a complete record of everything the three may have said since. At the 2024 Disney Legend ceremony, Cameron later spoke about carrying Landau’s legacy forward, saying, “We make it our goal now to carry on his legacy,” according to Avatar.com on August 13, 2024.
