1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesKen in Barbie is a glossy comic showman; Daniel Balint in The Believer is a young man caught in a vicious ideological contradiction. The distance between them captures what makes Ryan Gosling’s best movie performances worth ranking: he can make a character’s smallest gesture carry as much weight as a full musical number.
This is a considered shortlist, not a definitive ranking of every role. The order weighs transformation, emotional and comic range, command of stillness and gesture, the demands of each genre, and how fully Gosling anchors the story. Awards offer context, not a verdict.
1. Drive (2011)
Gosling’s performance in Drive is a masterclass in making restraint active. His unnamed driver says little, but the tight control of his posture, gaze and movement makes silence feel like a choice rather than an absence. When that control gives way to violence, the contrast is startling.
The role’s challenge is to keep an action film’s central figure compelling without turning him into a familiar wisecracking hero. The Festival de Cannes describes the film as giving character importance alongside action. Gosling said the script appealed to him because it built around “a very strong character” while developing “a complex love story.” That combination gives the performance both its hard edge and its human stakes. Festival de Cannes: Ryan Gosling in Drive.

2. Half Nelson (2006)
In Half Nelson, Gosling gives the film its unsettled center as a teacher whose intelligence and ability to connect with a student sit alongside his self-destructive habits. The performance’s force lies in that tension: charisma does not cancel out damage, and vulnerability does not make the character’s choices harmless.
It is the most direct showcase here for his dramatic range in a contemporary, intimate register. Gosling received an Academy Award nomination for leading actor for the film. That recognition marks the performance’s prominence, but the case for its place on this list rests on how convincingly he holds together contradictory impulses. Academy Awards, 2007 ceremony.

3. Barbie (2023)
Ken is the ranking’s most overtly performative role: a comic character built for broad gestures, heightened reactions and musical display. Gosling plays the joke without making Ken merely a joke. His carefully timed shifts between swagger, bewilderment and hurt give the character an emotional shape, while the big comic set pieces demand the confidence of a musical performer.
The contrast with Gosling’s quieter work is the point. Rather than disappearing into a naturalistic character, he uses showmanship as the character’s language—and lets that display reveal insecurity beneath the pose. He received an Academy Award nomination for supporting actor for playing Ken. Academy Awards, 2024 ceremony.

4. La La Land (2016)
As Sebastian, a jazz pianist with a stubborn idea of artistic purpose, Gosling has to carry both a romance and a musical’s heightened emotional world. The performance is less physically explosive than Ken’s, but it depends on a related skill: making carefully composed gestures feel expressive rather than ornamental. He gives Sebastian ambition and tenderness, along with enough inflexibility to make the romance’s friction credible.
Gosling received an Academy Award nomination for leading actor. La La Land received 14 nominations at the 89th Academy Awards, a film-level total rather than a count belonging to Gosling. Neither figure determines the performance’s quality; what earns its place here is how he balances musical form with the character’s private stubbornness. Academy Awards, 2017 ceremony.

5. The Believer (2001)
The Believer is the early-career anchor of this list: a difficult lead role built around Daniel Balint, a young Jewish man drawn into neo-Nazi ideology. Its disturbing contradiction asks Gosling to make the character’s conviction and self-division legible without softening the harm of his beliefs.
The Festival de Cannes calls it a “blistering lead performance” that brought Gosling to international attention. The film won the Sundance Grand Jury Prize in 2001. Its place at the end of this ranking is not a judgment that the role matters least; it is the point from which the later transformations become clearest. Other performances worth considering
This ranking is deliberately selective, not a claim to cover every strong Gosling performance. The Cannes selected filmography also includes The Notebook, Blue Valentine, Lars and the Real Girl and The Place Beyond the Pines. Its biography notes Golden Globe nominations for Lars and the Real Girl and Blue Valentine. Those titles broaden the field, but nominations alone cannot settle where they belong in a performance ranking. Festival de Cannes: Ryan Gosling biography and selected filmography.
Why this order?
Drive takes the top position because its genre, romance and character work meet in a performance where control itself becomes expressive. Half Nelson makes a different case through emotional contradiction; Barbie and La La Land show how confidently Gosling can work in musical and comic modes. The Believer remains essential as a severe early lead role and a vivid measure of how far his screen presence can travel.
A different weighting—giving musical performance, comedy or raw dramatic intensity priority—could produce a different order. The strongest argument for Gosling is not that one role wins by a measurable score, but that these films ask markedly different things of him and receive distinct answers.
