Max, now branded HBO Max in its current help center, has moved from announcing a gradual password-sharing crackdown to offering a paid Extra Member Add-On in the United States. An account is for the owner and people who live with them; someone at another address generally needs their own subscription or an eligible add-on.
Can you share an HBO Max account with family?
HBO Max says an account is intended for the account owner and people living in the same household. Being related does not by itself make someone in another home part of that household. A college student or other family member living elsewhere should not assume they are covered by the ordinary account-sharing rules.

The service says it uses account details, profile settings, network data, device information such as IP addresses and device IDs, and user activity to help determine a household. It warns that sharing credentials outside the household can affect future access. See the HBO Max account-sharing guidance.
How the crackdown developed
In March 2024, Warner Bros. Discovery streaming chief JB Perrette said Max would begin addressing sharing outside households later that year and continue into the following year. By December 2024, he described a gradual approach: using explicit and implicit signals to assess sharing and tightening filters over time. He said the effort would not immediately match Netflix’s scale, noting, “it won’t be Netflix — we haven’t been in the market for 15 years.” The Associated Press covered the earlier plan, and TheWrap reported the later comments.

In April 2025, WBD announced the U.S. Extra Member Add-On. In May 2025, a report quoted the company’s then-stated expectation that the effort would take 12–18 months to reach “full steam” and expand to more territories. That was a forecast at the time, not confirmation of a current worldwide rollout schedule. The detailed current terms cited here are U.S.-oriented; availability and rules elsewhere should be checked locally.
What the Extra Member Add-On costs and includes
WBD announced the add-on in the United States at $7.99 per month plus applicable taxes, across subscription tiers. The price is the U.S. price in the April 22, 2025 announcement, not a worldwide rate. The add-on permits the account owner to invite one person outside the household to create a separate account. HBO Max’s help page says one add-on can be purchased, for one extra member.

Eligibility excludes subscriptions billed through an app store, internet, mobile or TV provider, as well as subscribers in the Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max bundle. WBD described the feature as a way to give viewers flexibility, but the practical value depends on whether the account owner’s billing method qualifies and whether one simultaneous stream is enough.
Extra member or separate subscription?
The choice is mainly between paying the add-on fee on an eligible household owner’s bill and having the other person take out a subscription of their own. The sources establish the add-on price, but not a comparable separate-account price for every plan or location; check the current local signup price before comparing totals.

Using HBO Max while traveling or at a second home
Travel does not necessarily mean someone has become a permanent member of another household. HBO Max’s guidance describes limited Home or Traveling selections and email verification, but those mechanisms are not a guarantee against interruptions for every travel pattern.
- Frequent travel in the United States: HBO Max advises streaming briefly at home on a phone, tablet or computer connected to home Wi-Fi at least once a month.
- More than one residence: The help page recommends streaming at each residence and repeating the process every 90 days.
- Verification prompt: Follow the on-screen email verification and Home or Traveling choices rather than treating a prompt as proof that the account is permanently blocked.

Why Max is enforcing household limits
The company’s public explanation has been that it wants to convert some out-of-household use into subscriptions or paid add-ons. The broader industry context is substantial, but it should not be confused with a Max-specific loss: the Los Angeles Times reported a Parks Associates estimate of $12.5 billion in expected 2024 losses from password piracy and account sharing across streaming services and pay-TV providers collectively. No Max-only financial impact figure was established in the cited coverage; the Associated Press reported in March 2024 that Perrette declined to estimate revenue from the planned crackdown.
