But that figure does not identify the headline’s “26-year-old sleeper,” prove that a sequel is planned, or establish that one particular older film should get a follow-up.
What Netflix’s 135 million views measure
Netflix’s engagement report, published January 20, 2026, records 135 million views for Happy Gilmore 2 during the second half of 2025, covering July through December. Netflix calculates “views” by dividing the total hours a title was watched by its runtime. It is an engagement measure—not a count of unique viewers, a theatrical box-office total, or an all-time cumulative figure. Netflix’s report says subscribers watched 96 billion hours across the service during that six-month period.

The number supports calling the sequel a major Netflix performer in that reporting window. It cannot, by itself, show how many individual people watched, how many watched to completion, or whether viewers want sequels to other Sandler films.
Why the original film’s box office is not a direct comparison
The original Happy Gilmore grossed $39 million in the United States and Canada, according to the Associated Press. That is theatrical revenue from a defined market; Netflix’s 135 million is a platform engagement figure calculated from viewing hours across its reporting period. The figures describe different things, so comparing them as equivalent measures of success would be misleading. The AP also describes how the original comedy found a wider following through DVDs and television reruns. The AP’s account provides context for how a film’s audience can continue to grow after its theatrical release.

What prompted the actual Happy Gilmore sequel
Adam Sandler told the AP that the sequel idea grew out of conversations about what might happen if Happy were “down and out.” He described the appeal of making a broad comedy in an interview with original co-writer Tim Herlihy. Those comments explain the thinking behind Happy Gilmore 2; they are not evidence of plans for a sequel to another Sandler movie. The interview attributes the remarks to Sandler.
Netflix’s guide credits Sandler and Herlihy with returning for the sequel, Kyle Newacheck as director, and Dennis Dugan as executive producer. Julie Bowen, Ben Stiller, and Christopher McDonald are among the returning cast, with Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio (Bad Bunny) among the new co-stars. Netflix Tudum’s cast and production guide gives the film’s credits and cast details. Netflix lists the 2025 film as a PG-13 comedy starring Sandler, Bowen, and McDonald. The “26-year-old sleeper” remains unidentified
The headline’s description does not name a film, and the available reporting does not establish which Sandler title it means. Without the title, there is no sound way to assess that film’s audience history, staying power, cast or rights-holder interest, or any sequel development. Nor is there a confirmed sequel greenlight in the evidence available here.
That distinction matters: Happy Gilmore 2’s performance can be evidence that Netflix viewers engaged with this particular sequel. It is not proof that another, unnamed film has similar demand or that a studio or streamer intends to revive it. Until the film is identified and a project is confirmed, “time for a sequel” is an opinion, not a reported development fact.

What the tie-in merchandise does—and does not—show
Netflix announced a Happy Gilmore 2 collection with Callaway that included limited-edition golf balls and an Odyssey Hockey Stick Putter, as well as a Subway meal promotion with character cups and merchandise. Netflix’s announcement establishes those promotional plans, not current stock or ongoing availability. The putter is a movie-themed collectible; the announcement is not a product evaluation or a recommendation for general golf use.
