There was no single breadwinner arrangement among the women interviewed ahead of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives. In a PEOPLE exclusive published September 6, 2024, cast members described changing, shared and individual approaches to earning money—and how creator work could affect their relationships. Their comments are personal accounts, not audited financial disclosures or a picture of Mormon households generally.
What the cast said about earning more than a partner
The PEOPLE interview focused on whether making more money than their partners affected the women’s relationships. The answers varied: provider roles shifted over time for some couples, others described working or earning together, and some women said their businesses or creator work were priorities in their own right.
That variation matters. “Breadwinner” is the interview’s framing of household roles; it does not mean every woman was the sole provider. The accounts also describe different stages of relationships, so they should not be read as a single snapshot of the cast’s finances.
Jennifer Affleck: a role reversal during medical school
Jennifer Affleck said she had been a stay-at-home wife and mother while her husband provided. When he attended medical school, she became the provider. She said the change was difficult for him at first because he had been accustomed to that role. In the related Betches interview, she put it this way: “When the roles were switched, I think it was really hard for him because he just wasn’t used to it.”

Mayci Neeley said her arrangement with her husband did not make a difference to them, although she described it as unconventional in her culture. What the accounts show—and what they cannot establish
The interviews illustrate several distinct ways work and household roles intersected for these cast members: a change in who provided, business work treated as a lasting priority, income shared or shifting between partners, and creator earnings used to support children. They do not rank the women by income or establish how common any arrangement is.
Neither the PEOPLE interview nor the related Betches coverage provides a representative statistic on earnings, breadwinner roles or creator income among Mormon women or families. These are individual stories, not evidence about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or all families in the community. Betches also quoted Mayci Neeley saying, “It is a full-time job, and people don’t realize that, but that’s how we make our money.” Her comment describes her perspective; it is not a measure of typical creator earnings.
