Lost on a Mountain in Maine is based on a real event: in 1939, 12-year-old Boy Scout Donn Fendler became separated from his hiking companions in fog on Mount Katahdin and survived nine days in the Maine wilderness before he was found. The story first appeared as a memoir told by Fendler to Joseph B. Egan; a 2024 film retells the event as a drama.
What happened to Donn Fendler?
Fendler was hiking on Katahdin with companions when fog separated him from the group. The Millinocket Historical Society records that he was lost for nine days. News of the search reached far beyond the mountain: mill workers, Boy Scouts and other volunteers joined the effort, according to the society’s account.
The Associated Press reported in 2024 that Fendler was found more than 30 miles (48 kilometers) from where he started. The AP also reported that he had lost 15 pounds (7 kilograms) and was bruised and cut, without pants or shoes. Those are figures and details from the AP’s account, not measurements presented here as an independent reconstruction of his route or condition. Associated Press account
Which works tell the story?
The memoir, graphic novel and film draw on the same historical event, but they are distinct works. The memoir is the original account; the graphic novel is a later retelling in illustrated form; the 2024 film is a dramatic adaptation.

| Lost on a Mountain in Maine (2024) | A drama based on the 1939 events. What does the film add?
The film turns the survival account into a dramatic feature and includes the family’s perspective, according to the Associated Press. That makes it a separate interpretation of the event, not a substitute for the memoir or a basis for assuming every scene reproduces the historical record. In an Associated Press interview, Fendler reflected on meeting people who had faced hardship: “I tell every one of them they have something inside them they don’t know they have.” Director Andrew Boodhoo Kightlinger described a related aim for the movie as reminding audiences of “the power of community, the power of caring about your neighbors.” These are separate statements from separate speakers. What the story can—and cannot—teach about hiking Katahdin
Fendler’s ordeal is a survival story, not a safe hiking plan. Baxter State Park’s current guidance emphasizes preparing for changing conditions, staying on the trail and planning to return safely to the trailhead. Check the park’s live guidance and conditions before a trip.
- Plan a route, read trail descriptions and respect the forecast.
- Sign the trail register and stay on the trail.
- Carry a topographic map, sun protection, extra insulation, a headlamp or flashlight, first aid supplies, fire-starting materials, a repair kit, extra food and emergency shelter.
- For a Katahdin hike, the park advises at least two quarts of water per person. Treat natural water before drinking it.
- Allow at least as much time for descent as ascent; the park warns that going down is neither easier nor faster.
Baxter State Park says more than 75% of its most serious search-and-rescue incidents began after a hiker left the trail, and that 80% of its search-and-rescue incidents occur on descent. These figures describe the park’s own incidents, not hiking or rescue outcomes nationally. Baxter State Park hiking guidance
