El viajero brasileño Jesse Koz y su perro Shurastey murieron el 23 de mayo de 2022 en una colisión en la carretera US 199, también conocida como Redwood Highway, en el condado de Josephine, Oregón. Las crónicas periodísticas describieron un choque entre el Volkswagen de Koz y otro vehículo, pero no establecieron una causa definitiva.
Qué ocurrió en la carretera de Oregón
El Comercio informó que el accidente ocurrió el lunes 23 de mayo en Redwood Highway. UOL ubicó la colisión en la US 199, cerca de Selma, y describió el otro vehículo como un Ford Escape. Ambos medios relataron un choque entre el Volkswagen de Koz y un vehículo que circulaba en sentido contrario; El Comercio señaló que las autoridades investigaban los detalles.
En su cobertura del 24 de mayo, UOL indicó que Koz había muerto en el lugar y que la policía todavía no había comunicado el estado del perro. El mismo medio atribuyó la confirmación de la muerte de Shurastey a una tía de Koz, quien administraba una cuenta relacionada con el animal. Por tanto, la confirmación sobre el perro debe atribuirse a la familia, no a la policía.
Quiénes eran Jesse Koz y Shurastey
Jesse Kozechen, conocido como Jesse Koz, era un viajero e influencer brasileño. En abril de 2017 emprendió un recorrido por América junto a Shurastey, su golden retriever, en un Volkswagen Fusca —el modelo conocido como Sedán en otros países— de 1978. Su objetivo era llegar a Alaska.

La pandemia interrumpió el trayecto: según los relatos periodísticos, Koz volvió a Brasil y después retomó el viaje desde México. Diario Libre informó que la última publicación descrita por la prensa los mostraba acampando en Oregón; desde allí planeaban continuar hacia Canadá y Alaska.
El vínculo que acompañó el viaje
En una entrevista de 2020 reproducida por UOL, Koz explicó que Shurastey le daba apoyo emocional y lo ayudaba a relacionarse con otras personas durante el recorrido. «Acho que se estivesse sozinho, sem o Shurastey, já teria parado, porque a parte emocional pega muito», dijo. Añadió que el perro le ayudaba a romper el hielo con quienes se acercaban a preguntar por el viaje.
