A 2023 settlement agreement involving Kim Kardashian, Kris Jenner, Ray J, Sonja Norwood and Kardashian Jenner Productions became public in 2026 through court-related filings. TMZ reported that the agreement set out a $6 million payment schedule, but the schedule does not establish that the entire amount was ultimately paid. The agreement also requires confidentiality and expressly says that settling did not amount to an admission of wrongdoing.

What is the reported $6 million settlement?

The public document is titled Confidential Settlement Agreement and Mutual General Release. It identifies Willie Ray Norwood Jr. (Ray J) and Sonja Norwood as claimants, and Kimberly Kardashian, Kris Jenner and Kardashian Jenner Productions as respondents. TMZ reported that the agreement set a total of $6 million in installments. In its March 31, 2026 report, TMZ said Ray J claimed he had been paid $6 million to keep quiet about the tape, while the Kardashian family had not confirmed his claimed total. An amount in a reported schedule is not, by itself, proof that every installment was paid.

The agreement copy is hosted by TMZ, not by a court. Its signature blocks show April 2023 dates but leave the day fields blank; contemporaneous reporting describes it as a 2023 agreement. The available copy therefore does not establish a specific signing day.

What did the agreement say?

Installments reported by TMZ

TMZ’s April 17, 2026 report described this schedule: $3 million within 30 days of execution, followed by $1 million by April 2024, $1 million by April 2025 and a final $1 million due in 2026. The report also said Kardashian and Jenner’s lawyers sought repayment of $5 million they said had already been paid, plus $1 million each for their alleged losses. They later said the remaining payment was no longer owed. Those are reported positions and demands, not a court judgment.

Confidentiality and exceptions

The agreement treats its existence, negotiations, terms, settlement amount and whether payments will or might be made as confidential. It says a breach of that provision is a material breach that immediately extinguishes Kardashian’s remaining payment obligations. The document also provides exceptions, including disclosures required by court order, disclosures to professional advisers who are bound by confidentiality, certain government requests and actions to enforce the agreement. The agreement copy and reporting are hosted by TMZ.

No admission of wrongdoing

The agreement says that none of the parties admits or acknowledges wrongdoing, liability or the truth of disputed matters by settling. It states: “This Agreement reflects the settlement of claims and contentions which are denied and contested and by entering into this Agreement no Party admits or acknowledges that they committed any wrongdoing.” It also says no court or arbitrator had ruled on the claims and counterclaims’ merits when the parties settled.

How did the agreement become public?

On March 31, 2026, TMZ reported that a Los Angeles Superior Court judge denied Kardashian and Jenner’s request to seal documents that included the agreement, finding they had not presented enough evidence that public disclosure would harm them. The ruling concerned the sealing request; it should not be read as a decision about whether anyone breached the settlement or whether the full reported amount was paid.

How does the agreement relate to the separate defamation case?

The settlement dispute sits alongside a separate defamation case. The Associated Press reported on October 2, 2025, that Kardashian and Jenner sued Ray J over statements they said falsely claimed they were under federal investigation and might face racketeering charges. Their complaint asserted: “No such federal investigation exists; no law enforcement agency has initiated any criminal proceedings or investigations related to racketeering charges against Ms. Kardashian or Ms. Jenner; and no credible evidence whatsoever supports these inflammatory allegations.” That quotation is the plaintiffs’ allegation, not an independent court finding.

Ray J’s claims that the settlement was breached are also allegations. A complaint, a lawyer’s demand or a party’s account does not establish the underlying claim; a ruling would be needed to resolve it. The tape featuring Kardashian and Ray J became public in 2007, according to the Associated Press, which explains the background to the agreement’s subject and restrictions on related statements.

What is known about the case and payment status?

The latest procedural account cited here is TMZ’s April 17, 2026 report. It does not establish what happened in either case after that date, whether the remaining installment was paid, or whether a court decided any alleged breach. Accordingly, the reported $6 million schedule and the parties’ competing claims should not be presented as a final court determination or a verified account of the payment history.
