7 Met Gala Rules, From the Annual Dress Code to the Reported Phone Ban

The Met Gala has an annual dress code, but not every reported restriction is an official museum rule. Here’s what’s known about phones, photos, age, food and entry.

The Met Gala does not publish a complete public rulebook for guests. Its annual dress code is announced by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, while several other restrictions—including a reported ban on phones inside—come from coverage of the private event. Here are seven commonly reported rules and practices, with that distinction made clear.

What are the rules of the Met Gala?

The answer depends on which rules you mean. The Met’s visitor guidelines apply to the museum generally. The gala’s dress code is announced for each year, but guidance on guests’ phones, age, food and invitations is reported rather than set out in a public Met Gala rulebook.

1. Follow that year’s dress code

The dress code changes with the Costume Institute exhibition. For 2025, The Met announced “Tailored for You,” connecting the theme to suiting and menswear. The museum said the code was intended to provide guidance while inviting creative interpretation. Vogue’s 2026 recap gives that year’s code as “Fashion Is Art.” These are annual themes, not a single permanent dress requirement. (The Met’s 2025 announcement; Vogue’s 2026 overview)

2. Keep your phone away inside, according to Vogue

Vogue reports that guests are expected not to use phones or post on social media once inside the museum. The policy is commonly described as a way to preserve privacy and encourage conversation, but the full current guest instructions are not publicly available. Treat this as reported event guidance, not a published visitor rule from The Met. (Vogue’s Met Gala overview)

3. No smoking in the museum or near its entrances

This restriction is part of The Met’s public visitor guidelines, which prohibit smoking—including e-cigarettes—inside the museum and near its entrances. It applies to museum visitors generally, not just gala attendees. (The Met’s visitor guidelines)

4. Don’t assume regular museum photography rules apply at the gala

For ordinary visits, The Met allows personal, non-flash photography in most galleries, subject to restrictions; some equipment and unauthorized staged shoots are not allowed. That general permission is separate from Vogue’s report of a stricter no-phone policy inside the gala. Museum photography guidance should not be read as permission for gala guests to take pictures. (The Met’s visitor guidelines; Vogue’s Met Gala overview)

5. Attendance is reported to be limited to adults

TV Insider reports that the gala is restricted to guests aged 18 and older, following a policy change in 2018. Because this age limit is not confirmed in a publicly available Met Gala policy document, it is best described as a reported event restriction rather than an official museum-wide rule. (TV Insider’s 2026 report)

6. Some foods are reportedly avoided

TV Insider says the gala menu avoids foods likely to stain clothing, stick in guests’ teeth or cause bad breath. That describes a reported menu practice, not a published list of officially banned foods; the specific dishes and any exceptions are not established in the public reporting cited here. 7. You can’t attend by buying ordinary museum admission

The gala is a private event, not a public museum evening. TV Insider reports that the guest list is limited and that Vogue approval is required for attendees. The precise approval process is not laid out in public Met or Vogue policy materials, so this should be understood as secondary reporting rather than a fully documented admissions rule. What happens at the gala beyond the rules?

Vogue describes a private evening that includes cocktails, dinner, performances and a viewing of the Costume Institute exhibition, while keeping many details out of public view. The event’s private character helps explain why some commonly repeated rules are available through reporting rather than a public, comprehensive guest handbook. (Vogue’s Met Gala overview)
