Shekhar Home is a six-episode Hindi detective series that gives Sherlock Holmes a playful Bengali reimagining. Kay Kay Menon and Ranvir Shorey make the partnership its strongest draw, but critics disagree on whether the mysteries around them have enough pace and intrigue. Watch it for the setting, performances and comic take on Holmes—not necessarily for a run of consistently gripping cases.

What is Shekhar Home about?

Released on JioCinema on 14 August 2024, Shekhar Home stars Kay Kay Menon as Shekhar Home and Ranvir Shorey as Jayvrat, his partner in detection. The six-episode Hindi-language series reworks Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories in fictional Lonpur, West Bengal, mainly between 1991 and 1993. The original premiere platform and date are established by 2024 reviews; they do not confirm where the series is currently available.

This is a playful adaptation, not a faithful transfer of Doyle’s Victorian setting or a remake of the Benedict Cumberbatch-led Sherlock. Creator and writer Aniruddha Guha told Bollywood Hungama that the aim was “to create an indigenous, innovative take on Doyle’s works.” The characters preserve recognizable echoes: Jayvrat is the Watson-like companion, Mrinmay corresponds to Mycroft, and Irabaty to Irene Adler. M supplies a continuing Moriarty-like threat.

How the Bengal setting changes the Holmes formula

The series shifts the familiar detective into an early-1990s Bengali world, bringing local culture and references into the Holmes framework. The period also affects how Home investigates: Guha told Bollywood Hungama that the era’s less advanced technology suited a story driven by observation and deduction.

That choice gives the show an identity beyond swapping names and scenery. Viewers looking for Doyle’s original period details or a close reproduction of familiar screen versions may find the differences substantial; those open to an Indian reinterpretation have more to engage with. The Bengali flavor and cultural references were among the elements Trisha Bhattacharya praised in her India Today review.

Performances and humor versus the mysteries

The partnership is the main attraction

Menon gives Home the authority of a formidable detective, while Shorey’s Jayvrat provides an easygoing counterpoint. Their rapport, the performances and the series’ humor are central to its appeal. Nandini Ramnath described the show as “light-hearted and insouciant” and praised its leads in Scroll. India Today was also positive about Menon and Shorey, while acknowledging that the series may not hit every mark.

The cases may not hold everyone’s attention

The critical divide is less about the cast than about momentum and suspense. Scroll found the cases before the confrontation with M “entirely forgettable,” though Ramnath considered the late twist effective. Shubhra Gupta’s Indian Express review was more negative, calling the six-part series plodding and its attempts at danger and intrigue weak. Gupta rated it 2 out of 5; that is one critic’s score, not an aggregate rating.

M’s threat runs through the investigations toward the closing episodes, giving the season a larger thread beyond its individual cases. But the late payoff did not make every earlier mystery feel compelling to Scroll, and the Indian Express assessment suggests that viewers seeking sustained suspense may find the pace a problem. The humor and cast chemistry are better reasons to try it than any promise of uniformly memorable puzzles.

Who is likely to enjoy it?

  • Try it if you enjoy Holmes adaptations that change the setting and tone, or want a detective series led by Menon and Shorey.
  • Temper expectations if intricate, consistently tense cases are your priority; at least two reviews found the mysteries or pacing wanting.
  • Choose another Holmes version if fidelity to Doyle’s original era and conventions matters more to you than a Bengali reinterpretation.

If you are curious about how the show reshapes Doyle, reading the original Sherlock Holmes stories can make the character parallels easier to spot; Guha said he returned to those stories while developing the series.

Verdict: Is Shekhar Home worth your time?

It is worth a try for its Bengali setting, humor and the Menon–Shorey pairing, especially if you do not need every case to land as a taut mystery. It is a less certain choice for viewers who want consistent suspense or a close adaptation of classic Holmes. The reviews appeared at the 2024 premiere, so they assess the series rather than its present-day streaming availability.
