The Rip has a sharp hook and two stars whose history together invites more than a routine crime-thriller pairing. But Joe Carnahan’s Netflix film does not develop that promise consistently: rushed exposition and thin characterization weaken the betrayals, while the familiar plot rarely delivers enough surprise to stand apart. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck remain engaging company, and the premise yields tense moments, but the movie’s strongest asset is also its most underused one: the relationship between its leads.
What is The Rip about?
Miami police officers find $24 million in a run-down stash house, and the discovery turns their team’s loyalties into a question. Netflix’s synopsis frames the haul as a test of trust; the story’s tension depends on whether the officers can rely on one another as the stakes rise. The film is a fictional thriller, not a reconstruction of every detail of a real police seizure.

Joe Carnahan wrote and directed the 2026 film. Damon and Affleck star alongside Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Kyle Chandler, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Sasha Calle, Néstor Carbonell, Lina Esco and Scott Adkins. The official Netflix synopsis describes the find as making trust fray and putting everyone and everything in question: Netflix Tudum.
Why the Damon–Affleck pairing is the film’s biggest draw—and its missed opportunity
The appeal is immediate: Damon and Affleck bring an established rapport to a story about partners and teammates under pressure. Jake Coyle’s Associated Press review finds their buddy routine winning, even while faulting the film around it. That ease gives some scenes a natural spark, and the two remain a persuasive reason to spend time with the movie.

But familiarity between actors is not the same as developed intimacy between characters. The Atlantic argues that the film largely neglects the leads’ personal connection, leaving a potentially distinctive source of tension unexplored. Rather than making friendship the emotional center of a story about trust, The Rip often treats the pairing as a selling point alongside the plot.
Do the betrayals and team dynamics work?
Not as reliably as the premise needs them to. Coyle calls the setup “nifty and timely,” but says the exposition is light and hurried, leaving viewers with too little understanding of the characters for the double-crosses to land with full force. When a thriller asks its audience to reconsider who is loyal, each reversal matters most when the relationships have been made legible first. Here, thin characterization blunts some of that emotional impact.

Tom Power’s TechRadar review likewise sees an engaging thriller up to a point, but says familiar storytelling and underused supporting characters limit its effect. The ensemble includes performers capable of adding different shades to the team, yet the film does not give every role enough room to register. The result is more effective as a sequence of shifting suspicions than as a deeply convincing portrait of a group whose bonds are breaking.
Is The Rip an original or especially tense thriller?
Its cops-and-cash setup is sturdy, and Carnahan can make the danger feel immediate. The film has compelling moments from its cast and the practical mechanics of a pressure-cooker crime story. TechRadar, however, finds it short on originality and on the storytelling shocks that might distinguish it from familiar genre material. That assessment aligns with the film’s central weakness: it generates questions about who can be trusted, but does not consistently deepen those questions or surprise with them.
Rank #3
The reviews point to a clear trade-off rather than a single consensus verdict. The premise and star pairing make the film watchable; rushed exposition, underdeveloped characters and a lack of fresh turns keep it from becoming a more memorable thriller. AP lists the film at 133 minutes and rates it R for violence and pervasive language.
What does “The Rip” mean?
Writer-director Joe Carnahan says “rip” is Miami police parlance for taking a suspect’s property. In a seizure involving cash, drugs or weapons, the confiscation itself is called a rip. Netflix Tudum quotes Carnahan explaining the term and its connection to the film’s premise: Netflix Tudum on the title.

How much of The Rip is based on a true story?
TIME reports that a $24 million Miami-Dade Police Department cash seizure became the foundation for the film. TIME describes that event as the department’s largest cash seizure in its history; the figure refers to that specific reported seizure, not to a general pattern or statistic. The movie turns the inspiration into a dramatized pressure-cooker story, so the real event should not be conflated with its fictional characters or assumed to account for every plot event.
Carnahan told TIME that the film is “really about human beings” and “the connections between people,” including what a team, friends and loved ones mean to one another. That stated interest makes the film’s limited development of its central friendship especially noticeable. TIME’s account of the inspiration.
