ScreenDollars estimated in August 2025 that the film needed $500 million in worldwide sales to be profitable. It passed that estimate by about $21.9 million—but that comparison alone cannot establish whether the film actually made a profit.
Reported budget and worldwide box office
The Numbers lists a $200 million production budget for The Fantastic Four: First Steps. That is a database figure, not a budget disclosure from Disney. The same source reports a worldwide theatrical gross of $521,858,728, comprising $274,286,610 domestically and $247,572,118 internationally. These figures were accessed October 4, 2026. What box office did it need to succeed?
ScreenDollars wrote on August 3, 2025, that the film would need $500 million in worldwide sales to be profitable. That was an outside industry estimate, not an official Disney break-even figure. ScreenDollars’ August 3, 2025 newsletter
Compared with that estimate, the reported worldwide gross was $21,858,728 higher—about $21.9 million. This is a comparison between a reported box-office gross and ScreenDollars’ estimate, not a calculation of profit.

Why a $500 million target does not settle profitability
Worldwide box-office gross is the total customers paid for tickets, not the amount received by the distributor. Theaters retain part of ticket sales, and marketing, distribution, financing, tax incentives, and other costs affect a film’s overall result. Later revenue, including home-entertainment and streaming, can also matter. The available figures do not provide the film’s complete cost ledger, distributor receipts, or an official Disney statement confirming profitability.

The Numbers lists the domestic opening weekend separately as $117,644,828. That domestic-only figure is not the same measure as Disney’s $218 million worldwide opening. The final worldwide gross of $521,858,728 reflects the film’s full theatrical run, not just its debut weekend.
Premium formats at launch
Disney said 46% of the domestic opening-weekend box office came from Premium Large Format, IMAX, 3D, or specialty formats, and that the film played in 4,125 domestic locations. Those opening-period figures describe format mix and reach; they do not reveal the film’s eventual profit.

- Reported worldwide theatrical gross: $521.9 million, including $274.3 million domestic and $247.6 million international.
- Break-even comparison: The gross exceeded ScreenDollars’ dated $500 million estimate by about $21.9 million.
