Denji begins Chainsaw Man in extreme poverty, working as a Devil Hunter while burdened by debt. His closest companion is Pochita, a small dog-like Devil with a chainsaw. After Denji is betrayed and killed, Pochita saves him through a deal that fuses them—and Denji becomes Chainsaw Man.
Who is Denji?
Denji is the young protagonist of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s manga Chainsaw Man, which VIZ says began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2018. At the start, he is desperately poor and does dangerous Devil Hunter work while trying to deal with debt. VIZ’s series synopsis says the debt was inherited from his parents; Shueisha’s Volume 1 synopsis describes him as exploited by debt collectors.
Pochita is Denji’s companion, but also the Chainsaw Devil. Their bond is central to the story’s opening: Pochita is not simply a tool Denji uses for work.
How does Denji become Chainsaw Man?
- Denji works to survive. He hunts Devils while living under the pressure of poverty and debt, with Pochita beside him.
- He is betrayed and killed. During a job, Denji is betrayed and left dying.
- Pochita saves him. Pochita makes a deal with Denji, and their fusion brings Denji back as Chainsaw Man.
The transformation is the turning point in Denji’s life: the boy who had been struggling to survive becomes a human-Devil hybrid with chainsaw powers.

What changes after the transformation?
Denji’s circumstances shift. Shueisha’s MANGA Plus synopsis says he is living in the big city and is now an official Devil Hunter. But he has a lot to learn about both the job and his new powers. Becoming Chainsaw Man gives him a new life; it does not make that life safe or easy.
One way to read the setup is as a contrast between Denji’s basic struggle for survival and the extraordinary danger of Devil hunting. That is an interpretation of the premise, not a confirmed statement from Fujimoto about Denji’s motivations.

How far does this explanation cover?
This account explains Denji’s origin and the event that makes him Chainsaw Man. It is not a summary of his whole life across the continuing manga: VIZ’s catalog includes later volumes and related media, and its chapter listings extend well beyond the opening. For Denji’s story from the beginning, start with Chainsaw Man, Vol. 1; Shueisha’s Japanese Volume 1 listing identifies the 2019 edition as 192 pages, ISBN 978-4-08-881780-4.
