The woman singing the striking “rape, murder” passage on the Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter” is Merry Clayton. Called to a late-night recording session in 1969, the gospel and soul singer delivered a vocal exchange with Mick Jagger that became one of the track’s defining moments.

Who sings the female vocal on “Gimme Shelter”?

Merry Clayton is the singer. She was an experienced gospel and soul vocalist, not an unknown summoned without a musical background: her early work included singing with Ray Charles and the Raelettes, and she went on to record with artists including Ringo Starr, Carole King, Joe Cocker and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Legacy Recordings and The Guardian document her career and her contribution to the song.

Calling her part a backing vocal is accurate in the broad sense, but it understates how prominent it is. Clayton’s voice answers and intensifies Jagger’s lead rather than sitting unobtrusively behind it.

How Clayton came to sing the part

Clayton recalled that she was called late at night in 1969 and went to Sunset Sound Studios in Hollywood. When she saw the lyrics, she was startled by the words “rape, murder.” In her recollection to The Guardian, she told her husband, Curtis: “These boys want me to sing about rape and murder.” She was given the gist of the song and went ahead with the performance.

In a 2013 interview with Terry Gross on Fresh Air, Clayton said she performed the passage three times. She was tired and wanted to go home; after hearing a take, the people in the studio asked her to do another. Her voice cracked on “murder,” an unplanned break that gives the line much of its startling force.

Why the voice crack stayed in the recording

Clayton later explained that the crack was not a calculated effect. She said she was caught up in the moment, but also tired and eager to leave. Hearing the recording, she was grateful the break in her voice remained in tune: “I was just grateful that the crack was in tune.” The performance’s impact comes partly from that collision of control and strain: the line is musically shaped, yet sounds as if the emotion has pushed past the singer’s composure.

The session’s painful personal association

Clayton told The Guardian that she was pregnant during the session and suffered a miscarriage the following day. She attributed the miscarriage to the physical strain of the recording. That is Clayton’s account of the events and their cause; it should not be treated as an independently established medical explanation. She described the memory as leaving “a dark taste” and called it “a rough, rough time.”

Which “Gimme Shelter” recording should you listen to?

There are two distinct recordings that can be confused because they share a title. The Stones’ track opens Let It Bleed; Clayton also recorded her own version for her 1970 solo debut, Gimme Shelter. The solo-album version is not an alternate edition of the Stones’ recording.
