Reports in July 2024 said former England and Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater was working on a house construction site. He was 33 when he announced his retirement from professional football in October 2023. The construction work is a dated report, not confirmation of his current occupation.
What job was Danny Drinkwater reported to be doing?
In July 2024, GOAL and MARCA reported that Drinkwater was working on a house construction site. GOAL reproduced a reply attributed to his Instagram story: “Some of these messages, behaveeee. I love being on site grafting! It’s a choice.” That social-media post is known here through GOAL’s account; it was not independently reviewed.
The reports establish what he was said to be doing in July 2024. They do not establish what job he has in October 2026, so it would be inaccurate to present construction work as his confirmed occupation today.
Why did Drinkwater retire at 33?
Drinkwater announced his retirement on 30 October 2023. In an interview with the High Performance podcast, as reported by BBC Sport, he said: “I think I’ve been in limbo for too long.” He explained that although he wanted to keep playing, he had not found an opportunity at a standard or level where he felt valued.

How did his career lead to retirement?
Drinkwater was part of Leicester City’s squad when the club won the Premier League in 2016. In 2017, he moved to Chelsea for a reported £35 million. BBC Sport reported that he made 22 appearances in his debut season at Chelsea and earned three England caps. His Chelsea contract expired in June 2022, more than a year before he announced his retirement.
