Later reports attribute the account to an earlier interview, but the original interview and medical records were not available to independently verify the details. The evidence supports describing it as her reported recollection—not as a confirmed medical history or proof that the production caused lasting harm.
What Bonham Carter reportedly said
A 2025 Slashfilm report attributes this account to an earlier interview with Total Film: “I had to have an X-ray because I got bronchitis — surprise, surprise — during the six months of filming. And Fincher does so many takes and lots of smoke shots.” The quotation, as relayed by the later report, connects her reported illness with the shoot’s duration, repeated takes and smoke shots.

The original Total Film interview was not retrieved, so the wording has not been checked against that source. The six-month duration is part of the reported quotation, not a separately verified production statistic.
What the account does—and does not—establish
The available reporting does not provide medical documentation or independently establish the diagnosis, its precise cause, or the details of her care. It also does not identify the exact smoking materials, quantify exposure, or establish long-term effects. In particular, the account is not evidence that Bonham Carter suffered lasting health damage from the film.

A 2010 Guardian interview discusses her role and the film’s reception, while a 2019 Ringer retrospective offers production and casting context. Neither independently corroborates the bronchitis account. Chuck Palahniuk’s contemporary 1999 Los Angeles Times essay provides context on the adaptation and production, not evidence about Bonham Carter’s health.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to read the headline claim
The careful answer is that Bonham Carter reportedly said she developed bronchitis during the shoot and needed an X-ray. Later articles trace the account to an earlier interview, but the material available here does not verify it independently or support stronger claims about diagnosis, causation, treatment, exposure or lasting harm.

- Directed by David Fincher, this dark satire stars Brad Pitt and Edward Norton. Norton gives a riveting performance as a label-obsessed insomniac who befriends a scummy soap salesman (Pitt) and embarks on an existential crusade that takes them both to the brutal, raw heights of their manhood. Also starring Helena Bonham Carter as the woman who comes between them, Fight Club may leave you feeling bruised and bloodied but also invigorated and alive.
