Peacock announced a new Friday Night Lights adaptation in development in December 2024, but it has not announced a cast, production start or release date. The proposed story follows a high-school football team and its damaged interim coach as they pursue a state championship after a devastating hurricane hits their Texas town. In June 2026, original showrunner Jason Katims said there was “No update right now.”

Is the Friday Night Lights reboot happening?

Peacock announced the adaptation as being in development on December 11, 2024. That is not the same as a series order: the available updates do not establish that the show has been ordered, begun production or received a premiere date or release window. The latest located update came on June 2, 2026, when Katims told TV Insider, “No update right now.” Development status can change, so an eventual release date should be treated as unconfirmed until Peacock announces one.

What is the new series about?

Peacock’s announced premise starts after a devastating hurricane. A ragtag high-school football team and its damaged interim coach make an unlikely run at the Texas High School State Championship, giving their town a source of hope. That is the public outline, not a detailed episode synopsis: no town name, character names or further plot turns have been announced. The premise describes a new adaptation; Peacock has not said whether it continues the original series’ story.

Who is returning, and who is in the cast?

Peacock has named creative-team members, not actors. The announcement attaches original showrunner Jason Katims, director Peter Berg and executive producer Brian Grazer to the new iteration. It does not identify any cast members.

Taylor Kitsch ruled himself out

Taylor Kitsch, who played Tim Riggins in the original series, said in August 2025, “I was asked to do it. I’m not going back, no,” as reported by ABC News. His statement is about his own participation; it does not reveal what other original actors may do.

The 2026 reunion was not reboot casting news

Several original performers attended an anniversary reunion at the ATX TV Festival in May 2026. Paramount+’s reunion feature reports on that event, but does not announce those actors as cast members in Peacock’s adaptation. A reunion and a casting announcement are separate things.

Original cast for reference

The original drama featured Kyle Chandler as coach Eric Taylor, Connie Britton as Tami Taylor, Aimee Teegarden as Julie Taylor, Taylor Kitsch as Tim Riggins, Zach Gilford as Matt Saracen, Minka Kelly as Lyla Garrity, Jesse Plemons as Landry Clarke and Michael B. Jordan as Vince Howard. These are original-series roles, not confirmed reboot casting.

Could the reboot address NIL and social media?

At the May 2026 ATX TV Festival, Katims discussed why a contemporary version might still be rooted in Texas. “I think if you’re going to do Friday Night Lights, you would want it to be in Texas,” he told TV Insider, adding that name, image and likeness (NIL) issues are affecting high-school football even if they are not happening directly at the high-school level in Texas.

Scott Porter, who played Jason Street in the original show, contrasted the earlier series’ Voodoo storyline—about athletes being paid to relocate—with what he described as a current issue that is “just above the table.” He also pointed to social media and athletes living under scrutiny. Those remarks suggest subjects the creative team sees as relevant context; they do not confirm that NIL, social media or any particular storyline will appear in the new series.

How does the reboot relate to the original?

The television drama ran for five seasons, from 2006 to 2011 on NBC and DirecTV, according to Peacock. It was inspired by H.G. Bissinger’s 1990 nonfiction book, Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a Dream, which chronicles the real Permian High football team in Odessa, Texas. The book was adapted into a 2004 feature film.

The television series moved the story to fictional Dillon, Texas, and fictional Dillon High. Peacock’s new-series announcement describes a hurricane-hit Texas town, but does not identify it as Dillon or say that the adaptation shares continuity with the original. The book, film, original TV drama and proposed adaptation are related works, but their settings and stories should not be conflated.

Where can you watch the original series?

Paramount+ said in a July 2026 feature that all five original seasons were streaming on its service. Streaming catalogs change and vary by country, so check the current Paramount+ listing for your region. The original series is a separate viewing option, not the new adaptation.
