Spoilers for MobLand Season 1, Episode 5, “Funeral for a Friend.” At Tommy Stevenson’s funeral, Maeve provokes Vron, and Kevin drugs Maeve’s champagne to keep the confrontation from erupting. After Maeve wakes at the Harrigan home and makes an angry phone call, Vron gets into her car and it explodes. The sequence strongly suggests Maeve arranged the attack, but that is a recap writer’s interpretation of the ending—not an attribution confirmed by the official episode listings.
What happens at Tommy Stevenson’s funeral?
Richie invites the Harrigans to Tommy’s funeral, putting them in a bind: refusing could look like fear or guilt, while attending means entering a hostile family’s space. The Harrigans go, but Harry arranges to have weapons brought into the Stevenson home in case the invitation is a trap. That precaution does not mean a gunfight happens at the funeral.

The danger instead builds through Maeve’s behavior. She needles Vron, and the tension nearly draws Eddie into a confrontation. Kevin drugs Maeve’s champagne to stop her from escalating things at the gathering. These scene details come from Jonathon Wilson’s April 27, 2025, recap; the official episode listings confirm the funeral and rising tension but do not provide this full sequence.
What happens in the final scene?
Maeve wakes at the Harrigan home, realizes she has been drugged, and makes an angry phone call. In the next scene, Vron gets into her car and it explodes. The cut connects Maeve’s anger to the explosion, making her look responsible, but the recap’s conclusion that she arranged it is an inference—not a confirmed on-screen explanation in the available official summaries.

#1 Best Overall
The blast turns the funeral’s uneasy show of restraint into apparent retaliation. Rather than settling anything, the gathering leaves the family feud more dangerous.
Why the funeral escalates the feud
The funeral is a public test of how far the two families can restrain themselves. The Harrigans’ hidden-weapons contingency shows they expect danger; Maeve’s provocation shows how quickly personal humiliation can overwhelm that caution. Kevin’s attempt to contain her stops an immediate scene, but it does not resolve the grievance that follows her home.
Paramount+ frames the broader conflict as a turf war over territory, influence, and revenge. Its series guide says Tommy’s death shatters a fragile peace and that Vron’s slight against Maeve helps push the feud toward all-out war. The funeral therefore sits within an existing conflict, not a dispute that begins or ends with this one event.

Episode 5 is titled “Funeral for a Friend.” Platform listings differ slightly on its runtime:
| Listing | Runtime shown | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Apple TV’s Paramount-supplied listing | 41 minutes | Names the episode and summarizes Kevin and Harry’s search for an exit strategy, Brendan’s approach to Seraphina, Richie’s proposal, and Maeve’s move. |
| CANAL+ listing | 42 minutes | Names the episode, credits Daniel Syrkin as director, and describes the funeral, weapons brought in case of a trap, rising tension, and Maeve provoking Richie’s wife. |
The difference is what each platform displays; neither runtime should be treated as universal.
What the ending implies—and what it does not confirm
The strongest reading is that Maeve responds to being drugged and humiliated by arranging the attack on Vron. The timing supports that reading, but the official episode descriptions do not name her as the person behind the explosion. It is more precise to call her the likely instigator than to present the order as confirmed fact.
The episode also contrasts Harry’s efforts to manage risk with the family’s readiness to provoke violence. Apple TV’s short synopsis says, “Maeve, in her element, strikes,” while Paramount+ describes the wider feud as an escalating cycle of revenge. Neither description independently confirms who caused Vron’s car to explode.
How the funeral scenes were performed
Pierce Brosnan described the funeral scenes’ theatrical quality in an April 27, 2025, Los Angeles Times interview: “The whole piece has a theatricality — it was like doing a play.” He also said Helen Mirren’s choice was to channel Lady Macbeth.
