FKA Twigs’ *EUSEXUA* Review: Finding Ecstasy in the Dancefloor’s Details

On EUSEXUA, FKA twigs turns the idea of ecstatic presence into restless electronic music, balancing familiar club sounds with strange textures and stark final ballads.

On EUSEXUA, FKA twigs makes a compelling case that ecstasy is not just an idea to describe but a feeling music can put into the body. The album draws on familiar dance-pop and club sounds, yet its restless vocals, abrasive textures and abrupt shifts keep it from settling into easy nostalgia. Its closing ballads trade momentum for desolation, giving the record a more complicated emotional shape than its premise might suggest.

What does “eusexua” mean?

Official Charts characterizes “eusexua” as a fleeting ecstatic state found in art, music, sex and unity, and quotes twigs calling it “the pinnacle of human experience.” In Official Charts’ album overview, the concept is linked to presence and connection rather than a single genre or setting.

Twigs connected the idea to raving in Prague and wanting to carry the rave’s egoless, embodied feeling into ordinary life, as recounted in The Atlantic’s review. That ambition gives the album a useful tension: it invokes an experience that resists explanation, then tries to make it tangible through rhythm, voice and sound.

How the album turns its concept into sound

EUSEXUA is not simply a continuous dance-floor rush. Apple Music’s editorial description calls it a love letter to dance music’s emancipating power while noting that it is not explicitly a dance record. Its percussion changes with each song’s emotional weather: “Girl Feels Good” leans into subterranean trip-hop, while “Room of Fools” reaches for big-room melodrama, according to Apple Music’s album editorial.

That variability makes the concept more persuasive than a uniform run of club tracks would. The grooves provide physical forward motion, but twigs keeps disrupting their smoothness. The Atlantic critic Spencer Kornhaber hears echoes of 1990s and early-2000s techno-futurism and familiar pop touchstones, then points to mechanical scraping, yodels, chants and shifting vocal textures as the details that unsettle those references. Melodies sometimes cut across the grooves rather than simply riding them.

For this critic, that contrast is the record’s defining strength. The broad references offer points of entry; the stranger sounds and vocal gestures prevent the album from becoming a straightforward exercise in revival. Twigs’ voice functions less like a fixed lead line than another changing instrument—at times forceful, at times uncanny, and often difficult to separate from the production’s atmosphere.

Where the track sequence takes the listener

The album moves through 11 tracks, beginning with “Eusexua” and ending with “Wanderlust.” Its sequence shifts among club forms and moods rather than holding to one continuous pulse:

  1. “Eusexua”
  2. “Girl Feels Good”
  3. “Perfect Stranger”
  4. “Drums of Death”
  5. “Room of Fools”
  6. “Sticky”
  7. “Keep It, Hold It”
  8. “Childlike Things”
  9. “Striptease”
  10. “24hr Dog”
  11. “Wanderlust”

The album’s credited producers include Koreless, Eartheater, Jeff Bhasker, Stuart Price and Stargate. Official Charts describes its stylistic reach as drawing on techno, house, garage, glitch and drum & bass. Those overall credits and genre references help explain the range, but they do not establish detailed track-by-track production assignments.

“Childlike Things” takes a conspicuous turn with a Japanese rap verse by North West, a detail noted by Official Charts. It adds another contrast to a record that is already resistant to a single mood or vocal approach.

Do the closing ballads deepen the album?

In Kornhaber’s reading, “24hr Dog” and “Wanderlust” close the album as stark, desolate ballads. Their retreat from propulsion changes the terms of the record: after so much attention to movement and embodied presence, the endings leave space for vulnerability and emotional distance.

The shift broadens the album’s emotional range, though it also makes its conclusion less like a conventional dance record’s final release. Rather than simply sustaining euphoria, EUSEXUA lets that feeling recede. The contrast is effective because the closing stillness makes the earlier movement feel temporary, not guaranteed.

Verdict

EUSEXUA works best when its dance-pop familiarity and sensory strangeness pull against each other. Its concept finds a credible musical form in shifting rhythms and a voice that refuses to stay in one shape, while the late ballads complicate the promise of unbroken ecstasy. The result is not a seamless club set, but a more distinctive album about chasing a state of presence that can only last for a moment.
