Who was James Lowe?
Born Thaddeus James Lowe in San Luis Obispo, California, on March 5, 1943, Lowe spent part of his teenage years in Hawaii. After returning to California, he performed folk music and worked in rocket-engine production before forming a band called the Sanctions. The group became the Electric Prunes, which formed in Los Angeles in 1965, according to The Guardian.

Lowe became known for his voice and guitar work as the Prunes entered the emerging American psychedelic-rock scene. The band’s official announcement described him as its “lead singer and founder.”
The Electric Prunes’ best-known music
“I Had Too Much to Dream (Last Night)”
The group’s second single, “I Had Too Much to Dream (Last Night),” reached No. 11 in the United States in 1966, as reported by The Guardian. Its inclusion on the 1972 compilation Nuggets helped bring the song to later generations of listeners. The track remains the band’s best-known single.
#1 Best Overall
Most of the Electric Prunes’ hits were written by Annette Tucker and Nancie Mantz. Lowe’s significance was as a performer and founding member, rather than as the principal songwriter behind those hits.
The 1967 albums and “Get Me to the World on Time”
The Electric Prunes released their self-titled debut album and Underground in 1967. The debut included “Get Me to the World on Time,” which Pitchfork described as the band’s final Top 40 single. Producer Dave Hassinger suggested a change of name; Lowe offered “Electric Prunes” as a joke. As Pitchfork quoted him: “It’s the one thing everyone will remember.”

Mass in F Minor and the original lineup’s departure
Hassinger later brought composer David Axelrod into a concept-album project that combined Gregorian music and psychedelic pop. The result, Mass in F Minor, included “Kyrie Eleison,” which appeared in the 1969 film Easy Rider. Parts of the record were later sampled by MF Doom and Madlib.
Lowe and drummer Michael Weakley left the band in early 1968; other original members departed later. Reflecting on the original group’s short run in a 2000 conversation with author Richie Unterberger, Lowe said: “Some things are meant to be short and sweet. Life is but a dream.”

What Lowe did after the Prunes
After leaving the band, Lowe worked as a recording engineer. His credits included all three albums by Todd Rundgren’s band Nazz and the first two albums by Sparks. He later left music for television production.
The original Electric Prunes lineup reunited in 1999. The band released Artifact in 2001, followed by California (2004), Feedback (2006) and WaS (2014). Looking back on the reunion in the same 2000 conversation, Lowe said it reminded him “how much fun music is” and described making a good record without “the profit motive and all that greed” as difficult.

What is known about Lowe’s death?
The Electric Prunes’ official website announced Lowe’s passing and identified him as the band’s founding lead singer, but did not state when he died or how. The Guardian and American Songwriter reported that he died of natural causes at 82. The Guardian quoted his family saying: “Dad leaves behind a legacy of sound, love and boundless creativity.”
The reported date is disputed. American Songwriter’s May 31, 2025 report gives May 22, while Pitchfork’s June 1, 2025 report says the family placed his death on Thursday, May 29. The published reports do not resolve the conflict; the band’s announcement supplies no date to clarify it.
