Venom’s best-known comic-book lineage is Venom → Carnage → Toxin. The Life Foundation symbiotes—Scream, Agony, Lasher, Phage and Riot—form a separate branch associated with Venom, while Sleeper is another named Venom child. Hosts such as Eddie Brock and Cletus Kasady are people bonded to symbiotes, not symbiote descendants.
Venom’s comic-book family tree at a glance
| Symbiote | Relationship or branch | Host association |
|---|---|---|
| Venom | Parent of the best-known descendants shown here | Eddie Brock is a prominent host |
| Carnage | Venom’s offspring | Cletus Kasady is its best-known host |
| Toxin | Carnage’s offspring | First bonded with police officer Patrick Mulligan |
| Scream, Agony, Lasher, Phage and Riot | Life Foundation group; a separate branch associated with Venom, not Carnage’s children | Marvel’s profile associates the group with Life Foundation hosts |
| Sleeper | Another symbiote Marvel names among Venom’s children | Not detailed in the cited family summary |
This is a useful guide to the central relationships, not an exhaustive genealogy of every symbiote or every continuity change. Marvel’s summaries establish the relationships above but do not map every later branch issue by issue.
Venom and Carnage: the central parent-child relationship
Venom is the parent node in the familiar lineage. Its offspring Carnage emerged after the symbiote reproduced while bonded to Eddie Brock. Marvel identifies Carnage as Venom’s offspring and names Amazing Spider-Man (1963) #345 as the story in which Carnage’s seed appears. Marvel’s Toxin guide and its Carnage profile describe the connection.
Keep the symbiote and host distinct: Carnage is the symbiote; Cletus Kasady is its best-known host. Likewise, Eddie Brock is a host associated with Venom, not Venom’s child. This distinction matters because family-tree shorthand can otherwise make a human host look like part of the symbiote lineage.

Toxin is Carnage’s offspring
Toxin continues the central line: Venom → Carnage → Toxin. Marvel identifies Toxin as Carnage’s offspring and says it first bonded with police officer Patrick Mulligan. Its guide points to Venom vs. Carnage (2004) #1–2 for Toxin’s emergence and naming.
Patrick Mulligan is Toxin’s first host, not another name for the symbiote. Later host and status changes mean that a simple chart should not treat the symbiote and any one host as the same entity. The guide is a starting point for the lineage, rather than a complete account of every subsequent change.
The Life Foundation symbiotes form a separate branch
The Life Foundation group consists of Scream, Agony, Lasher, Phage and Riot. Marvel describes them as Venom clones in one overview and later refers to them collectively as Life Foundation symbiotes. They belong on a separate Venom-associated branch—not beneath Carnage as Carnage’s children. Marvel’s Venom symbiote stories retrospective and Carnage profile cover the group; the listing for Extreme Carnage Alpha (2021) #1 names all five in its later story framing.
“Clone” and “offspring” are useful shorthand for showing their connection to Venom in a simplified diagram, but they do not make this group part of the Venom–Carnage–Toxin parent-child chain. Marvel’s summaries support the separate-branch presentation without supplying a complete, issue-by-issue genealogy for every member.

Scream later becomes Silence; Sleeper is another Venom child
Scream and Silence
Marvel says Scream later becomes Silence through Anti-Venom’s antibodies. Show this as a later identity or status associated with the Scream symbiote—not as a new descendant in the family tree. Marvel’s Scream overview provides further character and appearance context.
Sleeper
Marvel also names Sleeper among Venom’s children. The same family guide does not establish an exhaustive placement for every later branch, so this tree includes Sleeper as a named descendant without trying to diagram relationships it does not clarify.

Where to start with the comics
- Amazing Spider-Man (1963) #345: Marvel identifies this as the story in which Carnage’s seed appears.
- Venom vs. Carnage (2004) #1–2: Marvel points to these issues for Toxin’s emergence and naming.
- Venom: Lethal Protector: Marvel’s Venom story retrospective points to this story in connection with Venom and the Life Foundation’s early appearances.
- Extreme Carnage Alpha (2021) #1: a later story listing that names the Life Foundation group.
For collected editions, check the publisher’s contents and format rather than assuming a trade paperback contains a particular arc. Marvel lists Venom Modern Era Epic Collection: Sting of the Scorpion as a physical trade paperback with Venom, Carnage and Toxin story descriptions. That listing establishes the edition’s format and described material; it should not be taken to mean it collects every story named above.
