January 6 in Italy has two closely linked meanings: it is the Christian feast of Epiphany, and it is the day Italians associate with La Befana, the folklore figure who visits children overnight with sweets or coal. The date also marks the close of the Christmas season. Celebrations differ by place: Urbania in Marche is known for a multi-day Befana festival, while Rome has several distinct events, and Venice and Verona have their own traditions.
Why January 6 matters in Italy
In Western Christian observance, Epiphany falls on January 6, twelve days after December 25. The feast is associated with the visit of the Magi to Jesus. In Italian popular tradition, the night between January 5 and 6 is also La Befana’s night: she is said to fly on a broomstick and fill children’s stockings with sweets, or with coal for children considered naughty. The custom is part of the wider seasonal celebration, but La Befana folklore and the Christian feast are not the same thing.
Italy’s national tourism guide describes the Befana character as shaped by an interweaving of older agricultural rites, Roman inheritances, Germanic mythology and Christian symbolism around the Magi. That is an account of overlapping cultural influences rather than a single, conclusively documented origin story. The name is associated with Epifania; Rome’s tourism history page describes a linguistic progression through “Pifania” and “Befania.”
Where to see Befana celebrations
Events range from a concentrated town festival to processions, street celebrations and local customs. January 6 is the fixed observance date; event schedules, opening hours and program details vary by edition, so check the relevant organizer or municipal notice for the year you plan to visit.

Urbania: a multi-day festival in Marche
Italia.it describes Urbania as the Befana’s home and its festival as running from January 3 through 6. The reported program includes a Befana Post Office and House, street performances, local Marche food, crafts and pottery, tours of local monuments, and a Befana descent from a bell tower. These are recurring features in the tourism profile, not a guarantee of a particular year’s schedule.
Italia.it also reports 30,000 annual visitors, 4,000 stockings displayed around town and 420 kilograms of sweets produced for the festival. The page does not state a publication year for those figures, so they should be read as source-reported descriptions, not verified current-year totals.

Rome: several different events
Rome’s Befana season can include Piazza Navona’s fair and arrival, a historical-religious procession on Via della Conciliazione, and the Corri per la Befana race at Parco degli Acquedotti. They are separate events, not parts of one single celebration.
Piazza Navona has a long association with seasonal Befana festivities. Turismo Roma says the nineteenth-century fair was centered around Piazza Sant’Eustachio before moving to Piazza Navona after Italian unification. The same source presents possible older connections between the Befana celebrations and Diana; these should be understood as possibilities, not settled origin claims.

- Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem
The City of Rome’s notice for the 2025–26 edition said the Piazza Navona event ran through January 6 and scheduled La Befana’s arrival for 14:00 that day. That time describes that edition only and is not a future schedule. Separately, Turismo Roma listed the Viva la Befana procession on Via della Conciliazione for January 6, 2026, as free and open to all; that listing verifies the 2026 edition, not a later one.
Venice, Verona and coastal towns
- Venice: the Regata della Befana is a rowing race along the Grand Canal, with participants dressed as Befana.
- Verona: the rogo della vecia involves the burning of a large puppet.
- Coastal towns: the national tourism guide mentions Befana swims in places including Cervia and Marina di Pisa.
These examples show the range of regional customs; they are not a complete event list or a promise that each celebration takes place unchanged every year.

Choosing between Rome and Urbania
For a trip centered on Befana, the two destinations offer different kinds of experience. Urbania’s reported January 3–6 format concentrates performances, family activities, food and crafts in one town. Rome offers a choice among a historic piazza celebration, a religious procession and a road race, but visitors need to match their plans to the specific event and edition dates.
| Destination | What the cited sources describe | Best fit | Planning point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Urbania, Marche | A January 3–6 festival profile, including the Befana House and Post Office, performances, local food and crafts, monument tours and a bell-tower descent (Italia.it; annual program details should be checked). | A concentrated, multi-day festival with family activities and regional crafts and food. | The tourism profile does not establish transport access, ticket requirements or a current-year program; check official local information for the edition you intend to attend. |
| Rome | Piazza Navona festivities, the Via della Conciliazione procession and the Corri per la Befana race are distinct events. The cited Rome notices concern the 2025–26 season, including a 14:00 Befana arrival on January 6, 2026, and a free procession that same day. | A choice of urban street spectacle, religious procession or race, with historic-city context. | Past edition dates and times do not confirm future schedules. Check municipal and tourism listings for the year of travel. |
Regional sweets are not one national recipe
Food traditions associated with the season vary across Italy. The national tourism guide gives examples including Piedmont’s candied-fruit fugassa della befana; Tuscan befanini biscuits flavored with rum; Abruzzese pepatelli made with almonds, honey and pepper; and Salento purcidduzzi, small pieces of fried dough. These are regional examples, not a single standard “Befana food.”

How to plan around the date
- Keep January 6 as the fixed observance date, but confirm event dates and times for the specific year. A past Rome arrival time or procession listing should not be reused as a current schedule.
- Choose by the experience you want: a multi-day festival and crafts in Urbania, or one of Rome’s separate piazza, procession and race events.
- For regional customs beyond those two destinations, look for local notices about Venice’s regatta, Verona’s rogo della vecia or coastal swims; the national overview does not provide a complete calendar.
- Verify practical details such as transport, accessibility and any ticketing requirements directly with current official event information; the cited tourism descriptions do not establish those details for a future edition.
