A dated event calendar instead lists a cozy fantasy and romantasy sale for October 3–4, then a separate Dark Reads Book Blast featuring dark romance for October 26–27. Because that calendar is a secondary roundup—not a live list from event organizers—check the host’s own page and the retailer’s displayed price before claiming any book.
What the October 2026 dates show
| Dates | Event listed | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| October 3–4, 2026 | Cozy the Day Away | The calendar describes a cozy fantasy and romantasy sale. Some books may be free, while others may cost $0.99 or be available through Kindle Unlimited; this listing does not confirm a dark-romance free-book event. Romance Bookworms is associated with other event listings, but verify the specific October promotion with its organizer. |
| October 26–27, 2026 | Dark Reads Book Blast | The calendar attributes it to The Indie Author Hive and describes darker themes including horror, thriller, and dark romance. Treat this as a lead and confirm the dates, participating books, and prices with the host. The Indie Author Hive |
| October 31, 2026 | Stuff Your Kindle Day | The Indie Author Revolution lists a 24-hour free-book event, but its page does not establish that it is specifically for dark romance. The Indie Author Revolution |
The Romance Bookworms page names August 10, 2026 as an event date, which has passed. Its page does not establish that a dark-romance event is live on October 4. Check the organizer’s event information for current announcements.

Why “Stuff Your Kindle Day” does not name one central event
Stuff Your Kindle Day is an umbrella label used for independently organized ebook promotions. The event directory defines it as “a free ebook blast marketing event, typically hosted by indie authors,” and notes that organizers submit their own events and details may change. Its history page says, “Anyone can host a SYKD event.” These phrases describe a community-driven format, not a single calendar with one controlling organizer. Event directory · Event history
The directory says the original event took place on December 26, 2014, with more than 60 titles from 35 authors. That is a historical count for that first event, not a measure of current promotions. Stuff Your Kindle event history

Dark Mode Books
The event directory describes Dark Mode Books as a bi-annual event for dark fiction, ranging from grimdark fantasy to splatterpunk. Its book pages use tags for tropes, representation, romance level, subgenre, age range, and content warnings. The directory describes a summer and winter schedule, but does not establish an exact next date or a live title list. Check its event page for current details rather than assuming a promotion is open. Stuff Your Kindle event directory
Dark Reads Book Blast
The October 26–27 calendar entry is a potential lead for readers seeking dark romance, but a roundup entry alone does not verify that titles are free, that the dates remain unchanged, or that the full list is available. Look for the event host’s current page before relying on it.
How to claim a book without relying on a stale price
- Confirm the event date and remaining window. Open the organizer’s current event page; an old roundup or a reused event name does not establish that the promotion is live today.
- Check the individual book’s details. Read its genre and subgenre, tropes, romance level, age range, and content warnings where available. “Dark” alone does not specify a pairing, intensity, or content profile.
- Choose a retailer that serves your storefront. Romance Bookworms lists Kindle, Apple Books, Nook, Kobo, and Google Play, though the options can vary by event and title. A Kindle device is not required to take part in an ebook promotion. Romance Bookworms
- Check the displayed price on the retailer’s listing before claiming. Event rules and deal windows vary, and a listing may be free, discounted, or available through a subscription. Do not assume a calendar description guarantees the price at checkout.
What event inclusion does—and does not—tell you
Romance Bookworms says its event is a collaborative community promotion run by a volunteer author who cannot vet every title, and that inclusion is not an endorsement. The organizer says authors are asked to affirm their AI practices, while cautioning that some may not be truthful. That statement does not establish the production history of any particular book or mean that every listing has been independently vetted. Romance Bookworms

The Indie Author Revolution displays download totals tied to its own seasonal events: 5,937 books for Summer 2025, 8,415 for Autumn 2025, 20,011 for Winter 2025, and 4,940 for Summer 2026.
