Spoilers for the ending of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. Yes—Ethan Hunt survives. His burning parachute is followed by an emergency parachute, and Phelps and Kittridge rescue him. The Entity is contained, not shown destroyed, while Luther Stickell dies stopping Gabriel’s bomb from causing an even greater catastrophe. Ethan’s final decision about the AI—and whether he will retire—remains unanswered.
What happens to Ethan Hunt at the end?
In the final aerial sequence, Ethan defeats Gabriel in a dogfight and inserts a poison pill into the Entity’s source code. His parachute catches fire, but an emergency parachute opens. Phelps and Kittridge collect him, and he survives.
Later, in London, Grace hands Ethan the Entity, contained in Luther’s data drive. The film leaves Ethan holding the dangerous AI rather than showing what he does with it.
What happens to the Entity?
Grace captures the Entity in Luther’s drive after Ethan’s attack on its source code. It is contained, and the immediate threat of the AI controlling world systems is stopped. The film does not show the Entity being permanently destroyed, nor does it reveal whether Ethan chooses to destroy or preserve it.

- Hunt and the IMF pursue a dangerous AI called the Entity that's infiltrated global intelligence.
Who dies?
Luther Stickell
Luther is the major loss. Gabriel’s bomb detonates beneath London, and Luther’s actions limit the blast, killing him. His sacrifice helps bring the mission to a close, but the film does not make the victory cost-free.
Does Ethan retire, and is this the end of the franchise?
The IMF team separates after the mission, a closing image that can read as a pause or a farewell. It does not confirm that Ethan has retired, and the film does not establish that the franchise is over. Ethan’s next move is left open.
