Jonathan Van Ness called a Rolling Stone article about alleged conduct on the Queer Eye set “overwhelmingly untrue and done in bad faith,” while acknowledging that there were times they could have been better. The accounts and response were reported in 2024; the coverage reviewed here does not establish an independent finding resolving the allegations.

What was Jonathan Van Ness accused of?

Rolling Stone published an investigation in March 2024 based on accounts from people connected with Queer Eye production. A June 27 summary by Rolling Stone Canada described seven sources: four production sources and three others who had worked with Van Ness. They alleged demeaning conduct and outbursts, including rage and emotionally abusive behavior. One unnamed source described feeling fear when Van Ness became angry.

Those descriptions are allegations attributed to sources who spoke to Rolling Stone, not independently established findings. In its June 27 report, Rolling Stone Canada quoted one unnamed source saying there was “a real emotion of fear” around Van Ness when they became angry, calling it “intense and scary.” The characterization belongs to that source; it is not a verified conclusion.

What did Van Ness say in response?

Van Ness addressed the allegations on Jessie Ware’s Table Manners podcast in late June 2024. As quoted by Rolling Stone Canada, they said they believed the article was “overwhelmingly untrue and done in bad faith.” They also acknowledged: “I know that there were times where I could have been better.”

Van Ness added that there had been moments during their career when stress affected how they responded, giving the example of being “elbow deep in highlights” and saying they could not talk at that moment. They said the article left them feeling paralyzed and that they stepped away from social media for about three weeks.

When did the allegations and response become public?

  1. December 2023: According to Vanity Fair’s account, the cast learned that Rolling Stone was working on an article.
  2. March 2024: Rolling Stone published its investigation based on accounts from people connected with the production and Van Ness’s work.
  3. Late June 2024: Van Ness responded on Table Manners. Vanity Fair reported that they described spending January through March “walking on eggshells” while waiting for publication.

What is established—and what remains unresolved?

The public coverage presents two distinct accounts: allegations from people who spoke anonymously to Rolling Stone, and Van Ness’s rejection of the article’s account alongside an acknowledgment that they could have handled some moments better. The sources cited here do not establish an independent finding that resolves the competing accounts. The number seven refers to sources described in Rolling Stone Canada’s report, not to a measure of how common such conduct was.

What did Bobby Berk say about leaving Queer Eye?

Bobby Berk’s departure was discussed in the broader coverage, but his account does not establish a connection between his decision and the allegations about Van Ness. Berk told Vanity Fair that he thought his castmates were also leaving and had prepared to move on; he said he did not know he would be the only cast member not to renew his Netflix contract.
