No mistrial had been declared: the new judge denied that motion the following month. Young Thug later pleaded guilty, and the remaining trial ultimately ended without a murder conviction, according to the Associated Press.
What the July 2024 headline meant
“Possible mistrial” described an unresolved request, not a court decision. Defense teams had asked the court to end the proceedings, and the newly assigned judge had not yet ruled when lawyers met with prosecutors about possible plea agreements. The plea discussions and the pending motion were separate developments; the meeting did not itself declare or guarantee a mistrial. Rolling Stone Australia reported on the July plea talks.
Why the defense sought a mistrial
The dispute centered on a closed-door meeting involving former judge Ural Glanville, prosecutors and key witness Kenneth “Lil Woody” Copeland. Defense lawyers challenged the meeting and how the proceedings were handled, raising concerns they said warranted ending the trial. Those were defense allegations, not findings that misconduct had occurred.
Glanville was recused, and Judge Paige Reese Whitaker took over the case. Whitaker denied the defense mistrial motion in August 2024. The Washington Post reported the ruling on August 9, 2024; its earlier account of the pause amid complaints is dated July 1, 2024.

What happened to Young Thug
Jeffery Williams, the rapper known as Young Thug, pleaded guilty on October 31, 2024, ending his own trial participation. Georgia Public Broadcasting reported that his sentence was structured as 40 years: five years commuted to time served, followed by 15 years of probation and a 20-year backloaded term if he violates probation. The plea and sentence apply to Williams, not automatically to his co-defendants. Georgia Public Broadcasting’s account was published November 1, 2024.

The proceedings continued for other defendants after Williams’s plea. In June 2025, the Associated Press reported that the long-running case ended without a murder conviction; prosecutors dropped the remaining murder charge after a defendant pleaded guilty to a lesser charge. That overall outcome should not be confused with Williams’s individual plea or sentence, or read as a finding about every defendant’s conduct. Prosecutors had characterized YSL as a criminal gang, while defendants contested the case; those opposing positions are claims by the parties. The AP reported the case’s conclusion on June 4, 2025.
